Diversity opens new studio in Birmingham.

Diversity, known as the UK’s most successful dance group, will open the doors to a new dance studio in Birmingham city centre.

Expanding beyond their original base in Essex, this new location aims to connect with local dance communities and support the next generation of talent.

It is set to offer word-class facilities with a space open to everyone.

Diversity’s Ashley Banjo said: “What I love about Diversity is that we’ve never held an audition. It’s always been about the community and everyone who comes to learn and train with us.

The new bespoke venue is based on Icknield Street in the city’s Jewellery Quarter, which will mark Diversity studio’s second location. They also have a studio in Southend, Essex.

There will be in-person dance classes from beginners aged four up to adult professionals.

A range of styles will be taught including street dance, commercial and contemporary, with weekly lessons taught by core Diversity members themselves.

Students in the Diversity community are also offered creative performance opportunities through yearly productions, and early access to special masterclasses.

Peaky Blinders Dance Show to Tour China in 2026.

   

The hit dance show Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby is heading to China in spring 2026, as world-famous dance company Rambert celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Produced by ROYO and its international arm RTS Entertainment, the show will mark Rambert’s return to China – and the latest in a string of British stage hits to reach Asian audiences, following Life of Pi and Murder on the Orient Express.
Peaky Blinders, but make it dance

Inspired by the smash hit TV series, Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby is a spectacular dramatisation told through breath-taking dance, written by the show’s creator Steven Knight and choreographed and directed by Benoit Swan Pouffer,.

Accompanied by a live on-stage band performing specially commissioned music by Roman GianArthur, the production also features iconic Peaky tracks from Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Radiohead, Anna Calvi, The Last Shadow Puppets, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

This high-energy dance/theatre event digs deeper into the story of Thomas Shelby and the Peaky Blinders crew, taking you into the criminal underbelly of British society as Tommy, Arthur, Polly and the rest of the Shelby family gang are brought vividly to life on stage.

Rambert CEO Helen Shute said touring internationally is “part of Rambert’s DNA,” adding that the company is “honoured to return in our centenary year and meet audiences in China again.”

ROYO Group CEO Tom De Keyser, currently in Shanghai for Murder on the Orient Express, said the company is committed to expanding in Asia.

Amber Davies to Lead UK & Ireland Tour of Legally Blonde The Musical as Elle Woods.

Amber Davies is set to dazzle audiences across the UK and Ireland as she takes on the iconic role of Elle Woods in the upcoming 2026 tour of Legally Blonde The Musical. The production, co-produced by ROYO and Curve, will launch on 7 February 2026 at Leicester’s Curve Theatre and run until 7 January 2027, visiting major cities including Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, and Dublin.

Best known for winning Love Island in 2017, Davies has since carved out a successful career in musical theatre. Her stage credits include Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman, Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby, and Lorraine Baines in Back to the Future The Musical. Her casting as Elle Woods marks another milestone in her transition from reality TV star to respected West End performer.
Legally Blonde The Musical, based on the beloved 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, follows Elle Woods’ journey from fashion-obsessed sorority queen to Harvard Law School standout. The show is celebrated for its empowering message, catchy songs, and high-energy choreography.

Davies expressed her excitement about the role, calling Elle Woods “a dream character” and promising to bring “heart, humour, and plenty of pink” to the stage. The tour’s creative team has hinted at a fresh, vibrant take on the production, with updated choreography and bold visuals designed to captivate a new generation of theatre-goers.

‘Strictly Come Dancing’ to tour the UK in 2025.

    

Strictly Comes Dancing Live Tour returns for new dates throughout the UK from 17 January to 9 February 2025. Motsi Mabuse will join as a judge for the first time alongside Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, and Craig Revel Horwood.

Mabuse, who first gained international attention for her appearances on German television’s Let’s Dance alongside Eurovision star Guildo Horn, first joined Strictly Come Dancing in 2019 and has been a staple ever since.

In a statement, she said, “I’m thrilled to be joining my fellow TV judges Shirley, Anton, and Craig on the Strictly Live Tour. I’ve heard so much about the incredible audiences that come to the shows across the country – it will be such a joy to be part of that magic – I can’t wait for January!”

The Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour brings all the sparkle and fun of the television dance competition show to audiences. It will play 30 dates across the UK and have its grand finale at the O2 Arena in London on 9 February 2025.

Complete cast announced for Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis’ Warriors musical album.

Final casting has been revealed for the new Warriors album, penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) and Eisa Davis (Bulrusher).

The album will be released on 18 October on Atlantic Records. Warriors is inspired by the 1979 Paramount Pictures film and the novel of the same name by Sol Yurick. Described as an “immersive listening experience,” the story follows a New York City gang from Coney Island to the Bronx and back when they’re framed for the murder of a respected gang leader.

Davis and Miranda have revealed today the “Warriors” gang on the album. Eight-time Grammy winner Lauryn Hill will play Cyrus of Gramercy Riffs, while Kenita Miller (for colored girls…) appears as Cochise, Sasha Hutchings (Oklahoma!) as Cowgirl, Phillipa Soo (Hamilton) as Fox, Aneesa Folds (Freestyle Love Supreme) as Cleon, Amber Gray (Hadestown) as Ajaz, Gizel Jiménez (tick, tick…Boom!) as Rembrandt, Jasmine Cephas Jones (Hamilton) as Swan, and Julia Harriman (Hamilton) as Mercy.

Busta Rhymes has been cast as the voice of Brooklyn on the 26-track album, with hit singer Stephen Sanchez as Cal, Hamilton and tick, tick…Boom!’s Joshua Henry as Wanya, as well as Timothy Hughes (Hadestown) as Lance, and P NATION star Daniel Jikal as Joon.

Four-time Grammy Award-winner Marc Anthony (In the Heights) will play Tato on the LP, while four-time Grammy-nominated singer Luis Figueroa will play Miguel. Flaco Navaja (Tell Hector I Love Him) will portray Jesús and American rapper Chris Rivers “The Bronx.” Billy Porter (Kinky Boots) will play Granger, while Michaela Jaé (Pose) will star as Yaya, singer and songwriter Mykal Kilgore as Élan, Casey Likes (Back to the Future: the Musical) as Jesse and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Ghosts) as Sully, while Ghostface Killah and RZA will play the voices of Staten Island.

The Cops are played by James Remar (Barnes) and David Patrick Kelly (Victor). Remar and Kelly join the concept album in new roles, having previously originated the characters of Ajax and Luther, respectively, in the film. Also appearing on the album are Oscar and Tony nominee Colman Domingo (Rustin) as the Masai of the Gramercy Riffs and rapper Cam’ron as Manhattan. Nas will also play “Queens”.

Executive produced by the rapper Nas and produced by musician Mike Elizondo, Warriors will have 26 tracks.

Moulin Rouge! the Musical announces third UK tour stop dates and details.

Moulin Rouge! the Musical is preparing itself for a world tour in 2025 – and a third UK stop has been revealed.

The hit show is based on the much-loved turn-of-the-century film about a Parisian courtesan who falls in love with a writer. It starred Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. At the 74th Academy Awards, it was nominated for eight Oscars, winning two.

The new production will launch in the UK and travel internationally, opening first at Edinburgh Playhouse (25 April to 14 June 2025) and then heading to Bristol Hippodrome (26 June to 9 August 2025).

It has now been confirmed that the show will run at Manchester Palace Theatre from 20 August to 4 October 2025, with tickets on sale soon. The West End staging will simultaneously continue its run at the Piccadilly Theatre.

Directed by Alex Timbers, Moulin Rouge! the Musical has a book by John Logan, choreography by Sonya Tayeh, and music supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Justin Levine. The design team includes Derek McLane (sets), Catherine Zuber (costumes), Justin Townsend (lighting), Peter Hylenski (sound), David Brian Brown (wig and hair design), and Sarah Cimino (make-up design). Casting is by Pippa Ailion and Natalie Gallacher.

Tickets for the West End production and for the Edinburgh run are now on sale.

• The Royal Ballet School has appointed Natasha Kaplinsky as its new Chair from the 1st of October.
• Performer Reece Richards was assaulted and falsely arrested by the Metropolitan Police in London while returning home after a performance.
• Boy Blue won the inaugural Sky Arts Award.
• The Dolly Parton musical “Here You Come Again” will run at the Hammersmith Studio in London from the 10th of December until the 18th of January 2025. It will have choreography by Lizzie Gee and Teenie MacLeod.
• Lead casting has been revealed for the UK premiere of “Fly More Than You Fall”. It will star Keala Settle and will run at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant from the 18th of October until the 23rd of November. The movement director is Heather Douglas.
• “Chicago” will embark on a new tour next month. It will star Faye Brookes as Roxie Hart plus Brenda Edwards and Kevin Clifton from Grimsby.
• “Just For One Day – The Live Aid Musical” will transfer to the Shaftsbury theatre in the West End on the 15th of May 2025. The show will have choreography by Ebony Molina.
• The West End production of “Mrs Doubtfire” will have its final performance in London on the 26th of April 2025.
• The annual Tony Awards will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York on the 8th of June 2025.
• The Sierra Leonean ballet dancer Michaela DePrince has died aged 29.

• Lead casting has been announced for the UK premiere of “Muriel’s Wedding The Musical”. It will star Megan Ellis and Annabel Marlow. The choreography is by Andrew Hallsworth. The show will run from the 10th of April until the 10th of May 2025 at the Curve theatre in Leicester.
• The full cast has been announced for Sondheim’s final musical “Here We are”. It will star Tracie Bennett and Denis O’ Hare and have choreography by Sam Pinkleton. The show will run at the National Theatre in April 2025.
• “Twiggy The Musical” will open in Cheltenham from the 4th of September until the 12th of September 2025 ahead of a UK tour.
• “Clueless” is coming to the West End. The show will have choreography by Kelly Devine and will open at the Trafalgar theatre on the 15th of February 2025.
• The world premiere of the new musical “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” will be staged in Bath in the Spring of 2025.
• “The Lightening Thief” is set to open at The Other Palace in London from the 23rd of November until the 2nd of February 2025. It will be directed and choreographed by Lizzie Gee.
• “Bat Out of Hell” has revealed tour dates and venues for its 2025 tour. The show will star Glenn Adamson and Katie Tonkinson and has choreography by Xenia Gusthart. The show will open in Edinburgh on the 6th of January 2025.
• Disney’s animated classic “Hercules” is headed for the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the Summer of 2025. It will have choreography by Casey Nicholaw and Tanisha Scott.
• The world premiere of “Wild Rose” will run from the 6th of March until the 5th of April 2025 at the Lyceum theatre in Scotland. It has choreography by Steven Hoggett.
• “Calamity Jane” will tour the UK and Ireland before a West End run in 2025. It has choreography by Nick Winston.
• The Leeds Playhouse will host the world premiere of “Coraline – A Musical” from the 11th of April to the 11th of May 2025 before the show embarks on a UK tour. The choreography is by EJ Boyle.
• “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” is set to embark on a world tour in 2025. The new production will launch in the UK while its West End staging will continue its run at the Piccadilly theatre.

Harper Beckham shows off her dance moves with dad David Beckham in new viral video.

Harper Beckham has the moves! Victoria and David Beckham’s youngest showed off her dance skills in a new video posted by fashion designer Victoria.
Inspired by her godmother Eva Longario’s new film Flamin’ Hot, Harper and David made a Mexican feast for dinner on Saturday June 23, and spent some time listening to Juan Gabriel at the same time.

“I’m salsa dancing!” Harper exclaimed as she danced across the kitchen and helped her dad make homemade guacamole. Harper, 11, wore the most adorable pale floral dress with cycling shorts, as David rocked a simple white tee and brown corduroy pants.

“Salsa Saturday!! When @Davidbeckham and #HarperSeven are inspired by @Flaminhotmovie @Evalongoria!” Victoria captioned the video, which you can watch below.

Frankie Goes To Bollywood musical announced.

Rifco Theatre Company, Watford Palace Theatre and HOME Manchester will co-produce new musical Frankie Goes to Bollywood.

The piece follows a British South Asian woman who is catapulted into the largest film industry in the world. It has a book by Pravesh Kumar, songs and music by Niraj Chag, songs and lyrics by Tasha Taylor Johnson and costume design by Andy Kumar.

Pravesh Kumar, who is also artistic director of Rifco, said: “In my decade working in Bollywood I collected so many stories of young people with bright eyes looking for the spotlight, who got chewed up and spat out by the nepotistic machine.

“Women are constantly objectified by the industry, and I wanted to tell a story about these issues that also embraces what we love about Bollywood. This show brings all the vibrancy of a Bollywood musical, and is also very funny with some larger-than-life characters, but I decided it’s time to we held up a mirror to the Bollywood film industry and exposed its darker side too.”

The show will premiere at Watford Palace Theatre in April next year, before heading to HOME Manchester as part of their 2023-24 season (which also includes Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder!, a new production of Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing and a new staging of Little Women). Additional tour dates, cast and creative team for the piece are all to be revealed.

Show starring the Northern Soul world champion dancer is coming to Wigan.

‘And they want local folk to contribute’

Theatre company Not Too Tame, which is known as a specialist in creating a great night out, is working on a Wigan version of its production title The Social: an experience that uses Northern Soul to tell local stories of the town’s dance venue, social clubs and those who will forever keep the faith.

Dubbing itself as a love letter to Wigan Casino and celebrating all things community, clubland and northern soul, it features live and recorded music while the audience will be able to get up and dance.

Brought to the borough by Down To Earth – Wigan’s Creative People and Places Programme – in collaboration with Not Too Tame, they will work together with local and national artists to uncover the true stories and memories of the Northern Soul communiuty so that they can feature real Wigan moments in the show.

They will be hosting several consultation days at The Old Courts and in social clubs where people can come together, tell their stories and reminisce over Wigan Casino memorabilia.

Jimmy Fairhurst, director and co-writer of the show said: “We are incredibly excited to bring this show to Wigan, the home of Northern Soul. We produce high-octane, heart-on-the-sleeve stories that are steeped in working-class culture and made by working class artists and this show is no exception. Northern Soul belongs to Wigan, so we must get this right!”
The show aims to celebrate regional identity and champion community, and promises to be a nexhillarating night for the audience.

The cast includes the incredible Sally Molloy, who was crowned World Northern Soul Dance Champion in 2022 so audiences can expect authentic dancing and music to get lost in and her unique story of winning the title will be told in the production.

Jenna Omeltschenko, director of Down To Earth, said: “We can’t wait to bring this brilliant and fun show to local people to celebrate 50 years of Northern Soul. See you on the dancefloor!’’

The show will tour around four social clubs between November 15 to December 9 : Hindley Community Sports and Social Club, Bryn Labour Club, Leigh Miners’ Welfare Institute and St Jude’s Social Club, Worsley Mesnes.

New theatre freelancers survey highlights ‘underpaid and overworked’ status of the industry.

The organisation known as Freelancers Make Theatre Work (FMTW) has released the findings of a survey today as the third in a planned series to be conducted from 2020 to 2025.

Carried out in March and April of this year in collaboration with the University of Essex, the survey illuminates the current status quo of theatre freelancers and addresses why many are leaving – or being forced out of – the industry resulting in skills shortages across the entire sector.

Paul Carey Jones, data and communications manager for FMTW, commented: “The 2023 Big Freelancer Survey paints a stark picture of a freelance workforce ‘under siege’, facing the perfect storm of a cost-of-living crisis, and the ongoing impact of Covid and Brexit; combined with deeply embedded structural inequalities. The clear message from this year’s survey is that the freelance theatre workforce feels ‘undervalued, underpaid and underappreciated’, a feeling that has been amplified by significant funding cuts in the last year.

“Although many find the work fulfilling, unsustainably low pay is leading to skills shortages across the arts industry, coupled with the devastating impact of the fallout from Brexit. The industry needs to take a long hard look at itself and call upon the government to assist in a much-needed shake up.”

The survey also indicates a 37.4 per cent pay-gap between the male and female workforce, widening to 47.7 per cent for freelancers with 21 to 30 years of experience in the industry. Furthermore, it concludes that the overall, average earning for theatre freelancers are 17.5 per cent below the UK national average salary.

Amid the current cost of living crisis, the survey has found evidence of “a chronic scenario in which many freelancers are living hand-to-mouth due to the constant expectation to work for below minimum wage or for free” and 64.6 per cent of respondents having to take on a greater workload for the same or even less pay in the last 12 months.

Since the pandemic, a high number of freelancers have left the industry, resulting in the hiring of low-paid, inexperienced freelancers and concerns over workplace fairness and safety.

In addition, almost 80 per cent of respondents claim that Brexit has led to a climate of uncertainty causing employers to discriminate against workers without EU passports, as well as UK practitioners and suppliers losing contracts to their EU counterparts due to increased import costs and slower delivery times. In particular, the opera, classical music and live events sectors have been impacted the most.

The survey also addresses the issues of persistent exclusivity, inequality and inaccessibility, with many participants discouraged due to the industry’s lack of meaningful progression in terms of equality and describing inclusivity as “just a word and not reality”.

The FMTW calls for a “thorough review of government funding policy”, alongside a system that enforces fair rates of pay and eliminates both the disparity between freelance and salaried staff wages and the gender pay-gap, tackles London-centric funding and increases the touring allowance to match inflation. It also highlights the continued need to improve accessibility for under-represented groups.

BBC Strictly Come Dancing star Giovanni Pernice is set to make a “dream come true” career move. The Strictly Come Dancing pro is set to launch his own fragrance.

Gio – who won the Glitterball Trophy – is partnering with two pals to start GP Vita lifestyle brand. A website shows him smiling as he declares: “Welcome to my exciting new venture, creating products to inspire and bring joy to life.”

Gio, 32, said: “One of my dream projects finally is coming to life.” He added: “Let’s play the game .. can you guess what it is? Thank u @jumeirahzs for having me and of course thank you to @trendingtravel for organising this exciting and fun trip.”

The cryptic Instagram post left some fans wondering whether he was set to QUIT Strictly. Gio shared a snap of himself putting pen to paper on a contract in Dubai.

“Signing the law banning pineapple on pizza in Dubai? Can’t wait to hear what it really is!” one fan joked. Tanya said: “My guess – launching your own cologne/ aftershave/ toiletries range? Whatever it is, wishing you all success!”

Grace Mouat performs “Any Day Now” from new musical Angry Salmon.

 

& Juliet and The Great British Bake Off Musical star Grace Mouat headed into the recording studio to perform a new number in support of the British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT).

BYMT alum Mouat joined Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer Jordan Paul Clarke in London in order to record solo tune “Any Day Now”, penned by Clarke as part of new musical Angry Salmon.

Angry Salmon is set to be presented by the BYMT at the Bridewell Theatre in London from 4 to 6 August, with a cast made up of current BYMT members. The piece tells the tale of a school of farmed fish getting lost in the British waterway system.

The video has orchestrations by Clarke, backing vocals by Nikki Davison and Clarke and music production and additional orchestration by Joe and Nikki Davison for Auburn Jam.

The new musical is about a school of farmed fish that end up in unfamiliar waters.

Take That film Greatest Days shines spotlight on fans.

While Gary Barlow has joked it was a “blunder” by producers not to test out his acting chops in Take That’s new film, in all seriousness the singer hopes Greatest Days’ cinematic success will be in “turning a mirror” on their fans.

Speaking to Media News, with faux upset, he joked that not casting himself as a leading man was “a huge blunder, in my opinion, but there you go – we go on, we go on!”

“We’ve got this brilliant audience and, you know, the one thing for us that was so important with [first] the musical, and the movie, was to turn a mirror on the audience and make it about them and how important they are within what we do.”

 

Directed by Coky Giedroyc with Tim Firth adapting his own stage show, comedian Aisling Bea leads the cast with the story focusing on a die-hard Take That fan who – 25 years on from her teenage crush – has to round up her old school friends after winning the chance to see the band in concert in Athens.

While the cast clearly had a blast breaking into song, Bea maintains it was a gruelling shoot.

“On Never Forget we did the conga 30 times down the road,” she explains. “That scene took two or three days of rehearsals… We hope it looks easy, but it never actually is behind the scenes.

Tina – The Tina Turner Musical announces new West End cast.

New casting has been announced for Tina – The Tina Turner Musical as it continues its West End run in the wake of the death of Tina Turner.

From 8 June, Karis Anderson, currently in the ensemble, will share the role of Tina with Elesha Paul Moses who continues in the role. Okezie Morro (Moon on a Rainbow Shawl) will join the show to play Ike Turner.

Mark Anderson joins to play record producer Phil Spector and lyricist Terry Britten, Jonathan Carlton will play record company marketing manager Erwin Bach, current ensemble member Vanessa Dumatey will play Tina’s sister Alline Bullock, Irene Myrtle Forrester continues as Tina’s Grandmother, Earl Gregory joins to play Tina’s father Richard Bullock, Harry Harrington joins as Tina’s manager Roger Davies, Emma Hatton joins to play Ike and Tina’s manager Rhonda Graam, Jarius McClanahan joins as Tina’s first love Raymond Hill and Carole Stennett joins to play Tina’s mother Zelma.

Ensemble members are Lauren Allan as Toni, Turrell Barrett-Wallace who continues to play Tina’s son Ronnie, Joey James who continues to play Tina’s son Craig and Thomas Sutcliffe who continues to play Carpenter.

The Ikettes are played by new cast members Morgan Broome, Amara Campbell and Abiola Efunshile, while the swings are Richard Appiah-Sarpong, Jenna Bonner, Ana Cardoso, Junior Delius, Livvy Evans, Ewan Grant, Imogen Rose Hart, Llewellyn Jamal, Amy Punter, Ellie Seaton and Samuel J Weir.

The Mackintosh Foundation announces Regional Theatre Technical Apprenticeship Programme.

Details have been revealed for the Mackintosh Foundation’s inaugural Regional Theatre Technical Apprenticeship Programme.

The new scheme, launched in association with 13 venues across the United Kingdom, aims to offer young people a stepping-stone into a career as a technical theatre professional and minimise the current industry-wide shortage of practitioners.

Cameron Mackintosh commented: “I started my career sweeping the stage of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and have worked in nearly every department in the Theatre from backstage to marketing – except the wardrobe, as my sewing wasn’t good enough! Learning how all the elements of a show are put together has been key to my long career as a producer.”

Applicants wishing to apply for an apprenticeship can do so via their relevant venue’s website. They must be over the age of 18 and ideally possess some basic theatrical awareness and computer skills. Those from marginalised groups and those with protected characteristics are also encouraged to apply.

The full-time placements will commence in autumn of this year and will range from 18 to 24 months, depending on the discipline.

13 venues across the UK are participating in the new scheme.

The theatrical institutions taking part and the respective roles on offer include Birmingham Hippodrome (creative venue apprentice), Bristol Old Vic Theatre (workshop theatre trainee), Chichester Festival Theatre (production management apprentice), Curve Leicester (creative venue apprentice), Edinburgh Lyceum Theatre (creative venue apprentice – lighting), Leeds Playhouse (costume making trainee), Lyric Theatre Belfast (production management apprentice), Northern Stage (creative venue apprentice – video and sound), Nottingham Playhouse (creative venue apprentice), Royal Shakespeare Company (wigs, hair and makeup trainee), Sheffield Theatres (creative venue apprentice), Theatr Clwyd (costume making trainee) and Theatre Royal Plymouth (production management apprentice).

Major new musical development scheme launched.

Burnt Lemon Theatre and The REcreate Agency have announced the launch of a brand-new musical theatre development scheme called Overture.

Presented in partnership with The Other Palace, Birmingham Hippodrome, Sheffield Theatres, MAST Mayflower Southampton, The Hope Mill, Warwick Arts Centre and China Plate, the scheme’s mission is to develop the skills of underrepresented musical theatre writing teams and nurture their relationships with both theatrical venues and talent.

Hannah Benson, artistic director at Burnt Lemon Theatre, commented: “As a company developing musicals, it can feel like an uphill battle figuring out what you need at every stage of a musical’s development to take the production from page to stage. So often we feel like we’re running without support, so I’m thrilled that we can attempt to mitigate this and provide an opportunity for artists to learn the foundations of making a musical, removing some of the hurdles that Burnt Lemon and many of our peers have faced along the way.”

Emily Beecher, co-creative director and producer at The REcreate Agency, added: “Developing a musical is a huge undertaking from start to finish, and it’s even harder for underrepresented creatives. Creating The Good Enough Mum’s Club with an all-female team has been a decade-long project for me, and so I’m delighted to help launch Overture – a new programme that will support musical theatre teams to better understand the intricacies of navigating musical theatre creation, whilst also allowing them to develop their unique voices, something that’s cutting missing from the UK musical scene.”

Applications for the scheme are now open, with a deadline of Sunday 18 June 2023, and teams from underrepresented backgrounds in the UK are encouraged to apply; including those from the Global Majority, working-class backgrounds, neurodiverse and disabled teams, trans and gender non-conforming and female-led teams. At least 50% of the places will be set aside for female and non-binary-led groups and an additional travel bursary is also available to ensure accessibility for those from all across the UK.

In total, six teams will be selected for the pilot programme, each receiving £1000 in seed funding, ten skill development workshops led by top practitioners (from September to November 2023), mentorship, peer-to-peer learning, and an industry showcase at The Other Palace. They will also be guided through next-step opportunities with the scheme’s partner venues.

Andrew Lloyd Webber: ‘The lifeblood of musical theatre is getting rather squeezed out’

In a 40-minute podcast, Andrew Lloyd Webber reflected on the current state of the musical theatre world.

Lloyd Webber, who recently ended a mammoth 44-year unbroken spell on Broadway with the closure of new musical Bad Cinderella, offered thoughts on a changing landscape in a chat for a new podcast from charity Help Musicians.

Lloyd Webber also recollected the initial album success of Jesus Christ Superstar, which was famously a vinyl smash before it even made its way to the stage. With the advent of streaming, the composer suggests “I’m not sure people listen to music in the same way that people did then.” This, he says, makes it harder for talent to emerge: “It makes it very difficult for young independent songwriters to get off the ground with a fair crack at the whip.” He also agreed with podcast host Chris Difford’s suggestion that attention spans have been shortened over the last few decades.

He also commented on the financial aspects of theatre, saying “It’s getting very difficult now to make production ends meet unless you’re a huge, huge hit. The lifeblood of musical theatre is getting rather squeezed out”.

The thoughts echoed those of Sonia Friedman, who warned at the Tony Awards on Sunday that plays like Leopoldstadt, which she produced, were being created in precarious circumstances: “The model needs a bit of fixing. I don’t know when there’ll be a play like [Leopoldstadt] again. It’s very high risk – however brilliant it is, however great the reviews are, however many people come. It’s a tough landscape for most shows, even those without 38 cast members.”

The Evita composer offered some thoughts on possible solutions: “The best way to get one’s work out now is to do it through one of the regional theatres. Sometimes they’ve got subsidies and can afford to do things that commercial producers probably can’t now.”

Evita, as it happens, is set to be staged by Curve Leicester, a subsidised venue that previously presented Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard and The Wizard of Oz.

As for his next project, audiences might expect a departure from Lloyd Webber: “I’m beginning to think the next thing I do may go a different way. I think there is a huge future in immersive theatre… there’s going to be a time when it’s not done in all the conventional spaces in the same way”.

These spaces offer something new for producers, Lloyd Webber said those spaces don’t have the “old union restrictions, huge costs that the theatre owners take”.

Lloyd Webber has also previously called out the lack of funding in music education, particularly in schools.

West End Star Lee Mead Announces October UK Concert Tour.

 

Award-winning stage and screen actor, singer and West End leading man, Lee Mead has announced an all-new October concert tour. The tour will see Mead, known for his powerful voice and magnetic stage presence, embark on a series of unforgettable performances, showcasing some of his favourite songs.

Rita Ora joined by 12-year-old Ukrainian dancer for Eurovision performance.

Rita Ora was joined by a young Ukrainian dancer forced to flee the Russian invasion for her performance at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The pop star delivered a medley of her past hits culminating in the first live performance of her new track Praising You, which celebrates her relationship with her husband, film-maker Taika Waititi. As the stage at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool lit up in red, the 32-year-old was joined by 54 backing dancers including 30 from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (Lipa).

Among them was 12-year-old Sofiia Kladko, from Rivne in the north west of Kyiv, who has been living in Warrington since 2022.

Shortly before her performance, Ora posted on Twitter paying tribute to the girl as representing “strength and hope during these turbulent, tragic and changeable times”.

She added: “We must not forget the privilege the UK has to play its part as host nation at the Eurovision 2023 for the Ukraine after the Kalush Orchestra won the contest last year.”

Ora grew up in Kosovo and later came to the UK with her family where she pursued her career in entertainment.

“The plight of Sofiia’s family reminds me of the incredible journey my family went through when I was her age, and how I will be forever grateful to the UK for showing us kindness and compassion,” she added.
“Sofiia opens my performance this evening playing with a ball, representing the loss of childhood for these poor refugees.

“I hope this amazing song contest opens hearts across Europe and the world. We love you Ukraine, we all perform tonight, for you.”

Ora’s performance came 14 years after she auditioned to represent the UK in 2009 with the song Get Here by Oleta Adams.

During the night, Alyosha, who competed at Eurovision in 2010, also duetted with former X Factor contestant Rebecca Ferguson on the Duran Duran track Ordinary World.

Alyosha had to leave loved ones behind in Ukraine following the Russian invasion and as she sung, text messages from families fleeing the country flashed up on screen and the stage set was lit up in the Ukrainian national colours of blue and yellow.

Co-host Julia Sanina, also from Ukraine, appeared visibly moved and described the performance as “so emotional”.

UK’s first all-wheelchair professional dance company performs The Snow Queen to sold-out theatres

Birmingham-based Propel Dance have performed their contemporary, reimagined version of the fantastical fairy tale at three venues across the Midlands in April.

Propel Dance, a brand-new professional all wheelchair-user dance company based in Birmingham concluded their short tour of The Snow Queen last night, bringing the run of the company’s first ever live performances to a hugely successful close.

The company secured investment from Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants in October 2022 to pilot the tour to three venues in April. Led by an all-female leadership team, the company was instigated and founded by One Dance UK member Helen Mason, a Birmingham-based Dance Artist with a track record of making dance for and with disabled people for over twenty years.

Propel Dance’s version of The Snow Queen is a captivating and enthralling dance production which focuses on the origins of the queen who brings endless winters. Brought to life by a talented company of professional wheelchair dancers, the production is a contemporary retelling through music and movement, based on the Hans Christian Anderson original story. The Snow Queen visited The Old Library in Mansfield on Friday 14 April, Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham on Sunday 23 April, and the Arena Theatre in Wolverhampton on Thursday 27 April.

The company is the first of its kind in the UK, and the five hand-picked wheelchair dancers alongside a professional musician and composer rehearsed at Midlands Arts Centre (MAC), Sense TouchBase Pears and Elmhurst Ballet School in Birmingham for three weeks before taking the show out on tour in front of audiences. Chesterfield to host international pole dance competition.

The Pole Art UK event will bring together some of the finest competitors from around the world for the event at the town’s Winding Wheel venue.

Now in its fourth year, Pole Art UK was founded by Stacey Snedden and Lorna Walker – who is a Chesterfield businesswoman and a former winner of the Miss Pole Dance UK title.

Owner of Derbyshire pole and aerial dance studio, Dakini, Lorna is now the sole organiser of Pole Art UK and said she is very excited to be bringing the event to her home town.

She said: “I am so honoured to be hosting Pole Art UK in Chesterfield this year. The Winding Wheel provides a beautiful stage for artists to showcase their creativity and talents. Our town has so much culture, which is often overlooked, and it’s a true privilege to be at the forefront, bringing something unique to our hometown.”

The competition will take place in Chesterfield, on Sunday, 16th July, 2023 at the historic Winding Wheel. Judges from across the UK and Ireland will be taking on the hard task of selecting the 2023 champions, as well as showcasing their incredible talents during guest performances, including Virgin Media’s ‘Big Deal’ winner Lisette Krol.The Judges will also be hosting pole and dance workshops at Dakini over the weekend, giving locals a chance to learn from some of the biggest names in the industry.

Pole Art UK has five competition categories for this year’s event which are: amateur, semi pro, professional, elite and this year’s new addition – freestyle.Six competitors in each category will present their most artistic pieces on stage, conveying emotions, stories and themes whilst incoporating gravity defying combinations on the pole.

First outdoor production of Hairspray to feature Jenny Gayner and Alex Lodge.

The UK’s first outdoor production of Hairspray will run at Kilworth House Theatre this summer, featuring Jenny Gayner and Alex Lodge in the cast. Gayner will play Velma Von Tussle and Alex Lodge will take on the role of Link Larkin. Charlotte-Hannah Jones will be playing the role of Tracy Turnblad.

The show, produced by Celia Mackay and directed and choreographed by Lee Proud, will have 52 performances.

Proud said: “Hairspray is without doubt one of the most uplifting and joyous musicals ever written and its messages of inclusion and equality resonate more today than ever before.

“We have gathered an incredible cast and we can’t wait to see you all at Kilworth House Theatre for an unforgettable night of entertainment.”

Tracy’s mother and father will be portrayed by Michael J Batchelor and Steven Serlin, with Holly Willcock taking on the role of Amber Von Tussle.

Paul Farnsworth is the set and costume designer, lighting designer is Jason Taylor, with sound designer Chris Whybrow.

The musical director and supervisor is Michael Bradley and Anne Vosser is the casting director.

Hairspray is set to start on June 27 and will run until August 6 in Leicestershire.

Strictly Winner Rose Ayling-Ellis Confirms EastEnders Exit.

Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis has announced that she is to leave EastEnders after two years. The actress has been playing Frankie Lewis in the BBC One soap. She was the first deaf actor to play a regular character on the soap.

Since joining in 2020, Rose had been involved in a number of big storylines, including Frankie discovering she is the daughter of Danny Dyer’s character Mick Carter, who was abused as a child. The 27-year-old has said she’ll “treasure” her time in Walford as her exit was confirmed.

Speaking of her departure, she said: “It’s been incredibly special to be EastEnders’ first regular deaf actor. I have loved my time on the show and Frankie has been such an awesome character to play, however now feels like the right time for me to move on and I am excited and ready for new challenges.

She added: “I will always treasure my time on the show and all the incredible people I have worked with, who have supported my growth as an actor these last two years and given me so many amazing memories. I am excited for viewers to see Frankie’s exit storyline; I think it’s a really important one that will hit home for lots of people.”

Rose also took to Instagram to share a series of images of herself posing on the set from her first to her last day. One image showed her gripping onto a signed ‘Albert Square’ sign and a bouquet of flowers. Anorher saw her posing with the Carter family. “Start from my very last day on the square,” she penned.

Arlene Phillips’s ‘House of Flamenka’ to open in London.

The dance production opens at the Peacock Theatre.

The flamenco and contemporary dance spectacular, House of Flamenka, will open in the West End later this year. House of Flamenka runs at the Peacock Theatre from 27 September to 8 October. Book House of Flamenka tickets on London Theatre.

House of Flamenka follows a woman who collects beautiful objects, notably her 20 extraordinary dancers and musicians who perform for her. House of Flamenka will feature a variety of flamenco and contemporary routines.

Karen Ruimy leads the House of Flamenka company made up of dancers from Spain and the UK. Ruimy co-coreates the shows with Grease West End choreographer, Arlene Phillips. Additional choreography is by James Cousins and Francisco Hidalgo.

• The Mill at Sonning has unveiled its 2022-23 season of shows including two musical revivals: “Top Hat” will star Jonny Labey with choreography from Ashley Nottingham and take place from the 16th of November until the 30th of December. “Gypsy” will play from the 24th of May until the 15th of July. The casting and creatives for the latter show have yet to be announced.
• “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” has confirmed new dates for its second UK tour which begins in September 2023. It will open at The Lowry in Salford on the 7th of September.
• ZooNation announced its production of “Mixtape” – celebrating 20 years of the Kate Prince company. It will take place at Sadlers Wells from the 5th to the 8th of October. Johannes Radebe’s Second UK Tour: Freedom Unleashed 2023.

TV dancing sensation and international champion Johannes Radebe is thrilled to be presenting a brand-new production Johannes Radebe: Freedom Unleashed, after the phenomenal success of his debut sell-out UK tour earlier this year. Johannes Radebe: Freedom Unleashed will open on 31 March and run through to 27 May 2023, performing across the UK and with a week-long run at London’s Peacock Theatre from 4 – 8 April 2023.

Little Simz and It’s A Sin secure wins at South Bank Sky Arts Awards.

British rapper Little Simz and Channel 4 mini-drama It’s A Sin have scooped accolades at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards at The Savoy Hotel in London. The South Bank Sky Arts Awards, hosted by Melvyn Bragg, celebrate a broad range of artistic genres including dance, theatre, music, TV and film.

London-born Little Simz, 28, took home the pop award for her fourth studio album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, which also secured her a Brit award earlier this year.

The multi-award-winning Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin – which follows a group of gay friends as the HIV/Aids crisis hits London – won the award for TV drama, triumphing over Time starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham and This Is Going To Hurt, based on Adam Kay’s bestselling memoir.

New Back to the Future The Musical cast announced.

The West End’s multi-award-winning Best New Musical has announced its new London cast. Back to the Future The Musical is heading into its second year at London’s Adelphi Theatre and has plans to transfer to Broadway in 2023. The new cast will begin from 17 August 2022. Tickets for Back to the Future The Musical are currently booking until 12 February 2023.

Ben Joyce will be taking over the lead role of Marty McFly. Joyce is currently delighting West End audiences in the role of Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys at London’s Trafalgar Theatre. Roger Bart will continue in the role of Dr Emmett Brown. Joining them will be Amber Davies (9 to 5 The Musical, Bring It On The Musical) as Lorraine Baines McFly, Oliver Nicholas (All Kinds of Limbo) as George McFly, Jordan Benjamin (Hairspray) as Goldie Wilson, Harry Jobson (The Urdang Academy 2022 graduate) as Biff Tannen, Sophie Naglik (The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe) as Jennifer Parker and Gary Trainor (School of Rock) as Strickland. Will Haswell will continue as alternate Marty McFly and Dave McFly, and Emma Lloyd will continue as Linda McFly.

Continuing in the ensemble will be Amy Barker, Cameron McAllister, Alessia McDermott, Laura Mullowney, Melissa Rose, Justin Thomas and Tavio Wright. Hamilton extends West End run to March 2023.

 

Smash-hit musical Hamilton has extended its West End run through to March 2023. You can be in the room where it happened this Christmas and New Year! Now starring Reuben Joseph in the lead role of Alexander Hamilton. Tickets for Hamilton at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre are now booking through to 4 March 2023.

What is Hamilton about?
Hamilton tells the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. During the Revolutionary War, an immigrant, Hamilton, became George Washington’s right-hand and went on to shape the foundations of the America we know today. The score by Lin-Manuel Miranda blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway – the story of America then, as told by America now.

General News & Sighting

• This week many theatres made adjustments in light of the record breaking heatwave – “Six” led the way with hydration breaks for the performers.
• The law has changed in relation to teaching 16 and 17 year old children. The NSPCC has created some specific guidance for dancers.
• West End backstage workers have rejected a 10% pay increase which had “strings attached”. (The Stage)
• The new musical “Ride” will begin performances at the Charing Cross theatre in London from the 25th of August (until the 27th of September). It will star Liv Andrusier and Yuki Sutton. The choreography is by Natasha Harrison.
• Casting has been confirmed for the UK premiere of “Mrs Doubtfire – The Musical”. It will star Gabriel Vick and Laura Tebbutt and run at the Manchester Opera House from the 2nd of September. The choreography is by Lorin Latarro.
• It was confirmed that Ben Joyce will be taking on the role of Marty McFly in the West End production of “Back To The Future”. Amber Davies will join the cast as Lorraine. The new cast will begin performances on the 17th of August. The choreography is by Chris Bailey, with additional dance arrangements by David Chase.
• Initial casting has been revealed for the forthcoming UK tour of “White Christmas – The Musical”. It will star Jay McGuiness and Lorna Luft and be choreographed by Stephen Mear. The show will open at the Truro Hall in Cornwall on the 12th of November before touring.
• “Cabaret” has extended its West End run until the 7th of January 2023. The choreography is by Julie Cheng.
• Lead casting has been revealed for “Cinderella” which will run at the Hope Mill Theatre. Grace Mouat will play the role of Ella. Cherise Logan will be the Associate Choreographer.
• Johannes Radebe announced his “Freedom Unleashed” tour for 2023.
• Katya Jones announced that she will be doing “Celebrity Masterchef”.
• The Royal Ballet announced its company promotions, new joiners and leavers. We spotted that Joseph Sissens is promoted to First Soloist and Ashley Dean is promoted to Soloist.
• West End producer Nica Burns announced the opening of Soho Place, the first new build West End theatre for 50 years. The theatre will be owned by Nica and operated by Nimax.

Future Dance Events News

• ZooNation announced its production of “Mixtape” – celebrating 20 years of the Kate Prince company. It will take place at Sadlers Wells from the 5th to the 8th of October. The performance will be co-directed by Dannielle “Rhimes” Lecointe and Bradley Charles. There will be special guest performers from the past and the present.
• Simon Lipkin and Georgina Castle will star in the West End revival of the musical “Elf” at the Dominion Theatre. The choreography is by Liam Steel. The show will open on the 14th of November.
• “Annie” will embark on a new tour in 2023, opening at the Curve Theatre in Leicester on the 25th of February before touring.
• “Back To The Future” has revealed plans to open on Broadway in 2023.
• Dolly Parton’s “Smokey Mountain Christmas Carol – A New Musical” will get a European premiere in December at the Southbank Centre in London. It will play from the 8th of December until the 8th of January 2023.
• Further touring dates were announced for the new production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical”. It will open at the Leeds Playhouse on the 18th of November.
• Casting was announced for the world premiere of “Mandela”, the new musical at The Young Vic theatre in London. It will star Michael Luwoye as Nelson Mandela and Danielle Fiamanya as Winnie Mandela. The show will run from the 29th of November until the 4th of February 2023. The choreography is by Gregory Maqoma.
• “The Bodyguard” will embark on a new UK tour at Glasgow on the 28th of January 2023.
• Further casting and an additional date has been announced for “Chess The Musical In Concert”. It will now play 2 dates at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on the 1st and 2nd of August. The Director and Choreographer is Nick Winston. The Associate Director and Choreographer is Alexzandra Sarmiento.
• Casting was announced for the Edinburgh Fringe run of “I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical”. The show will run at the Gilders Ballon from the 3rd of August until the 28th of August. The Direction and Choreography is by Joanna Goodwin.
• Disney’s musical “Newsies” will begin at the Troubadour Theatre Wembley Park on the 29th of November, with an official premiere on the 8th of December. Direction and choreography is by Matt Cole, with Jane McMurtrie as Associate Choreographer.
• A new production of “Shrek The Musical” announced a UK tour from July 2023. Nick Winston will be the choreographer.
• “Dirty Dancing” is to return to the Dominion Theatre on the 21st of January 2023. The choreography is by Austin Wilks.
• A new production of “From Here To Eternity” is coming to the Charing Cross Theatre from the 29th of October. Cressida Carre will be the choreographer.
• The complete cast and creatives have been revealed for Chichester Festival’s revival of “Crazy For You”. Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph the production. It will run from the 11th of July until the 4th of September.
• A star-studded “Sondheim” concert is to take place at the Cadogan Hall in London on the 23rd of July.
• To mark the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this summer, the Birmingham Royal Ballet is presenting a triple bill of “On Your Marks”, “Interlinked”, and “Lazuli Sky”.
• Casting has been announced for the new UK tour of “Strictly Ballroom”. It will star Kevin Clifton and Maisie Smith and begin in Portsmouth on the 26th of September.
• Three musical concerts will take place in August at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in London. The first will be the concert version of “Chess” on the 1st of August, starring Hadley Fraser & Samantha Barks.The Director and Choreographer is Nick Winston and Alexzandria Sarmiento. On the 8th of August it will be “Kinky Boots” starring Cedric Neil & Courtney Bowman. Finally on the 22nd of August there is a new musical called “Treason”, with choreography by Taylor Walker.
• The Edinburgh Festival takes place from the 5th of August until the 28th of August this year. Dance highlights include Scottish Ballet’s “Coppelia”, Akram Khan’s new “Jungle Book Reimagined”, the UK premiere of Kyle Abraham’s “An Untitled Love” plus Aakash Odedra’s “Samsara”.
• The “Secret Garden” musical is to be staged at the London Palladium on the 28th of August. It will be directed by Nick Winston.
• Brit Award winner Becky Hill makes her Ibiza Rocks debut this summer with a 6 weeks residency.
• Sir Ian McKellen is to perform alongside ballet dancers in a new show based on “Hamlet” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
• A new “Strictly Presents” tour was announced. It will feature contestants Maisie Smith & Rhys Stephenson, who will be joined by Strictly pro dancers Neil, Cameron, Jowita & Nancy. The show will tour in June and July.
• Disney musical “Newsies” will have its UK premiere on the 28th of November at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, London. The choreography is by Matt Cole.
• A 30th anniversary revival of “Crazy For You” will be staged in Chichester from the 11th of July until the 4th of September. It will be directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman – who choreographed the original production in 1992 for which she won the Tony award for Best Choreography.
• Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” will run at the Hope Mill Theatre from the 1st of November until the 11th of December. It will be directed by Joseph Houston and choreographed by William Whelton.
• The Chantry Dance Company announced that it’s 2022 production would be “Beauty And The Beast”. The tour details will be announced shortly.
• It was announced that Nicola Benedetti will become the new Director of the Edinburgh Festival in October 2022.
• Sir Matt Bourne’s “Sleeping Beauty” will return on tour this Winter, opening in Plymouth on the 12th of November. Further tour dates and casting is to be announced shortly.
• “Jagged Little Pill” will transfer from Broadway to London in November.
• Strictly stars Graziano de Prima & Giadi Lini will be choreographing a brand new musical called “La Bamba” – based on the story of Richie Vallens.
• In the Autumn, Northern Ballet will visit 10 cities with revivals of two family favourites: “The Little Mermaid” & “The Nutcracker”, plus a premiere of “Three Short Ballets”. The season will open at the Leeds Playhouse.

• The “Wicked” film adaptation, starring Ariana Grande, will begin filming at the newly built Sky Studios in Elstree in November. The rehearsal process will begin in August.

• We spotted Sally Jayne Hind, Emily Barnett Salter & Nicolle Matheu performing in the Secret Cinema production of “Dirty Dancing”.
• We spotted Julia Ruiz Fernandez filming at Warner Bros for “Fast & Furious 10”.
• We spotted the following dancers in the latest Freeman’s TV advert: Oluwatosin, Carmelle Rudder, Emma Atkins, Anna Sporri & Lewis Wilkins. The choreography is by Marie McGonigle.
• We spotted Zoe Slatter performing with Sinitta at Bournemouth Pride.
• We spotted Chrissy Brooke’s feet in the latest advert for Levi’s.
• In America, we spotted Caoife Coleman in the new TV advert for Wendy’s “Hot & Crispy”.

We Remember

Today is an incredibly sad day for a lot of people in the commercial dance world. Our thoughts are with the family and many friends of Dani Hampson.
