Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande win Grammy for “Defying Gravity” performance.

At the 68th Grammy Awards held on 1 February 2026, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande won the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their rendition of “Defying Gravity” from the first Wicked film.

The win has been widely celebrated by fans as a “redemption” following the recent Academy Award snubs for the sequel film, Wicked: For Good.

Pete Waterman to bring The Hitman Dance back to Warrington.

   

Legendary music mogul Pete Waterman is officially bringing “The Hitman” Dance Show back to Warrington for a massive open-air dance celebration on Saturday, 11 July 2026.
Inspired by the iconic late-night TV show The Hitman and Her, the event will transform Old Market Square into a nostalgic dance floor, paying homage to the legendary Mr Smith’s nightclub where the show first filmed in 1988.

The Headliner: Pete Waterman will host the night, channeling the “throwback energy” of the original series.

Flatley beats legal bid to block involvement in Lord of the Dance.

World famous Irish dancer Michael Flatley has beaten a legal bid to bar him from involvement in future Lord of the Dance productions.

Entertainment company Switzer Consulting Ltd took legal action against Flatley and claimed he was in breach of an agreement reached in July 2024 for it to run the multi-million pound production.

The firm had obtained the temporary order banning the 67-year-old choreographer and retired performer from involvement in upcoming shows.

But on Thursday, a judge in Belfast refused to grant a full injunction and discharged the temporary injunction that was in place.

Mr Justice Simpson freed Flatley from the temporary injunction due to the risk he could ultimately suffer “potentially unquantifiable” lost revenue.

Flatley declared the outcome a “fantastic victory” in his wider legal battle with Switzer Consulting Ltd.

“I’m very pleased not just for myself, but for my dancers, my cast and crew and everyone who believed in me,” Flatley said.

“The show goes on and we are going to lift the roof (in Dublin) on Thursday.”

Switzer is suing Mr Flatley for alleged breach of a service agreement reached in July 2024 for it to run Lord of the Dance touring operation.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie to return for new tour with added numbers.

The hit musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is set to return for a major 10th Anniversary tour in 2027, featuring a brand-new song by the original creative team.

Tour Details.
New Musical Number: The tour will include a newly written song by composer Dan Gillespie Sells and writer Tom MacRae, marking the first significant musical addition to the stage show since its premiere.

Launch Date: The anniversary tour kicks off at the Leeds Grand Theatre on 15 January 2027, exactly ten years after it first opened at the Sheffield Crucible.

Confirmed Stops: Following its opening in Leeds, the production is scheduled to visit several cities, including:
Chester, Sunderland, Sheffield, and Manchester, Wimbledon, Liverpool, Glasgow, Birmingham, Aylesbury, Oxford, and Woking

Representatives have indicated this 2027 run may potentially be the musical’s final major tour in the UK.

Dani Dyer forced to pull out of Strictly Come Dancing with fractured ankle.

Dani Dyer-Bowen has had to pull out of Strictly Come Dancing after fracturing her ankle in a fall during rehearsals.

The 29-year-old Love Island winner, who was paired with professional dancer Nikita Kuzmin, said she was “heartbroken” to be unable to compete.

The hit BBC One reality series has started its 23rd series, with the launch show broadcast last Saturday evening.

In a statement, she said: “I had a fall on Friday in rehearsals and landed funny.

“I thought I had rolled my foot but it swelled up badly over the weekend and after an MRI scan yesterday, it turns out I have fractured my ankle.

“Apparently doing the quickstep on a fracture is not advisable, and the doctors have said I am not allowed to dance, so I’ve had to pull out of the show.

“To say I’m heartbroken is the biggest understatement. I am so going to miss dancing with Nikita but will of course be watching closely and cheering all the couples on.

Billy Elliot star sues police for ‘career-ending’ injury.

   

A dancer who has starred in Billy Elliot in the West End is pursuing legal action against the Metropolitan Police after an officer “stamped” on his foot during a stop-and-search.

Alexander Loxton, who played older Billy in the musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre in 2013, claims the injury to his ankle ligaments put an end to his dreams of becoming a top-flight dancer.

He claims the force used against him was excessive, amounting to “assault and battery”, and is suing Met commissioner Mark Rowley on behalf of the Met Police for almost £600,000 in compensation for his lost career.

The commissioner denies all liability and claims that any injuries arose from Loxton struggling with the officers during the stop-and-search, which took place in London in 2016.

Rowley’s lawyer further claims that Loxton’s dance career was already suffering when the incident took place, the Independent writes.

“From January 2014, the claimant’s career plainly declined due to three things: injury, refusal by him to work for what he considered low pay and limited opportunity,” argued police barrister Robert Talalay at Central London County Court, according to the paper – although the barrister did reportedly accept that Loxton’s career had “initially showed great promise”.

But Loxton’s lawyer, Fiona Murphy, reportedly suggested he had the potential to establish a place among the “premier league” of ballet companies. In addition to his West End stint, Loxton had danced with the Royal Ballet Company in various productions and was a dancer with the Dutch National Ballet for three years prior to the incident.

Murphy reportedly called the injury “permanent and career-ending”, adding that Loxton found himself “unable to tolerate the full repertoire of dance manoeuvres” as a result of the incident, “with particular difficulties in the areas of jumping, changing direction and landing”.

Dollie Henry MBE won the award for Most Influential Industry Creative at the 2025 Dance School Awards.

The choreographer, creative theatre director, and educator Dollie Henry MBE was honored with the “Most Influential Industry Creative 2025” award at the Dance School Awards. Henry confirmed the win on social media on September 15, 2025, after attending the ceremony.

GB pair win first world figure skating medal since

Torvill and Dean.

Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson won Great Britain’s first figure skating World Championship medal in more than 40 years with ice dance bronze in Boston.

Not since 1984, when Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won their fourth and final global title, have British skaters stood on a world podium in any discipline.

But Fear, 25, and Gibson, 30, finally ended that wait on Saturday with a total score of 207.11 points, having finished fourth at the previous two World Championships.

American favourites Madison Chock and Evan Bates defended their title while Canada’s Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier took silver.

“I can’t even describe my feelings, I’m still shaking,” said Fear. “I’m in disbelief.”

Gibson added: “It’s a dream come true.”

Olympians Fear and Gibson are three-time European medallists and earlier this season claimed Britain’s first ever medal at the Grand Prix final.

In Boston, they had placed third after Friday’s rhythm dance but while their free dance routine – soundtracked by a trio of Beyonce hits – was judged the sixth best on Saturday, their combined score was enough to land them the greatest success of their careers to date.

The World Championships is a qualifying event for next year’s Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina.

Elsewhere, US skater Ilia Malinin won a second straight men’s figure skating world title with a routine which included a record-equalling six quadruple jumps.

The 20-year-old also carried off a once-banned backflip as part of his routine.

He and fourth-place finisher Adam Siao Him Fa of France became the first skaters in nearly 50 years to legally land the move at a world championships.

Strictly Come Dancing suffers major blow for first time in 20 years.

     

Strictly Come Dancing has been dealt a significant blow as it failed to secure a major award nomination for the first time in 20 years.

The popular dance programme first aired on May 15, 2004, with Tess Daly and Sir Bruce Forsyth at the helm, and Len Goodman, Craig Revel Horwood, Arlene Phillips, and Bruno Tonioli forming the original judging panel.

it’s now been revealed that Strictly has not been nominated for a Bafta TV award in the entertainment programme category for the first time since 2005, despite winning the award in 2016, 2017, 2020 and most recently in 2024.

The Bafta Television Craft Awards, presented by Stacey Dooley, are set for Sunday, April 27. The Bafta Television Awards with P&O Cruises, hosted by Alan Cumming, will follow on May 11

BBC Strictly Come Dancing’s Oti Mabuse says ‘this is a dream come true’ in major announcement.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star excited fans back in September when she confirmed her next project which will take her away from TV screens and back to her roots.

The dancer and TV star teased she had a big announcement on the way before revealing all as she took to Instagram with a video showing just her legs while wearing a pair of golden dancer’s heels. She could be seen pivoting several times and struck a pose before walking back out of frame.

The Dancing on Ice judge then revealed she would be heading out on a new UK tour, Oti Mabuse: Viva Carnival, in 2025. She is set to celebrate the world’s most electrifying carnivals, from the Sambas of Brazilian Carnival to the Tangos of Argentina’s Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia, the dance scene at England’s own Glastonbury Festival and the swing of the Jazz Fest in New Orleans.

The tour will be kicking off in Sheffield in June and will also see Oti perform at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on June 15, 2025. In a statement at the time, Oti said: “I’m so excited to bring Viva Carnival to the stage!

“Performing on stage is something I feel so passionately about and have missed so much. Dance has the power to bring people together and I can’t wait to party with everyone.”

Oti has now announced that she’ll be performing alongside special guest star Flavia Cacace. The Queen of the Argentine Tango joins the Queen of the Samba as Strictly legend Flavia joins forces with Oti in what is being described as “a powerhouse performance”.

ITV say Dancing on Ice won’t be back on our screens.

ITV has said they have no plans to make another series of the skating competition, ‘Dancing on Ice’.

The show has been on our screens since 2006, but it has not had as many people watching it in recent years.

An ITV spokesperson said: “Following another successful series earlier this year, Dancing On Ice will be rested in 2026 with no current plans for another series.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the cast and crew who have worked on the show since 2006, and over the previous 17 series, for all of their hard work both on and off the ice.”

Presenter Holly Willoughby thanked the “cast, crew, celebrities and everyone who has been part of the Dancing on Ice family” over the years.

She also paid tribute to Olympic legends and judges Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, who have also been a part of the show since it began 19 years ago.

“It has been an absolute privilege to work alongside true national treasures… and to have a front-row seat to their breath-taking skating. Watching them glide across the ice was nothing less than pure magic”, she added.

Coronation Street actor Sam Aston and his skating partner Molly Lanaghan were the latest pair to be crowned champions.

Other winners of the series have included former Olympic gymnast Nile Wilson and Waterloo Road actor Ryan Thomas.

Strictly Come Dancing return date confirmed – and there’s not long to wait!

    

The BBC has confirmed the return date of Strictly Come Dancing and fans can already start applying for tickets for the live shows.

BBC Strictly’s hotly anticipated return date has been announced, and fans are already buzzing with the chance to snap up tickets.

After a whirlwind of drama surrounding the beloved dance show, including Amanda Abbington, 50, labelling pro dancer Giovanni Pernice, 33, as “cruel” and “abusive” during their training – a claim he firmly rejects – the future of Strictly seemed uncertain.

Devoted viewers expressed fears that it might face the chop amidst the turmoil, but now all worries can be laid to rest as the air date is locked in, and ticket applications are open. Straight from the BBC’s ‘Be in the audience’ page comes the thrilling announcement: “Strictly Come Dancing is back! The stunning 22nd series returns, bringing glamour and show-stopping dancing back to Saturday nights on BBC One.”

The dazzling line-up includes the chic Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman taking the helm as hosts, while the discerning panel comprised of Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood, and Motsi Mabuse pass their judgement.

The series will be broadcasting live from Elstree Studios, sprinkled with a special episode from Blackpool’s iconic Tower Ballroom.

The Launch Show kicks off on the 14th September , and for fans eager to join the glittering audience, here are the dates you could get tickets for at Elstree Studios: September 21 and 28; October 5, 12, 19, 26; November 2, 9, 23, 30; and December 7 and 14. For those hoping to catch the magic at Blackpool, mark your calendars for Saturday, November 16.

Tickets for the shows will be allocated via a random draw, with applications open until 10pm on September 2. Fans can apply for up to one pair of tickets per recording, and successful applicants will receive tickets for only one show.

People are encouraged to apply only if they intend to use the tickets themselves. Strictly enthusiasts have been on edge about the possibility of next year’s live tours being cancelled, but this latest update is sure to lift spirits.

Amidst rumours and concerns over Giovanni’s conduct on Strictly, fans are eagerly awaiting a verdict that could shake the future of the beloved dance series.

The annual tradition sees stars from the show join the professional dancers on a UK tour, thrilling audiences with their live performances. Additionally, there’s a separate tour showcasing the incredible talent of the Strictly professionals.

With scant details about the anticipated tours, one concerned fan took to Reddit to express their uncertainty: “I’m curious if there’s going to be a Strictly The Professionals or a Strictly live tour next year. Usually they would have announced it and probably had tickets on sale before now. A lot of the pros also seem to be doing their own solo shows next year.”

Yet another viewer suggested patience, noting that such announcements typically come in October, as they responded: “They normally aren’t announced until October.”

The Strictly Come Dancing tour website, a joint venture between Stage Entertainment UK and Phil McIntyre Live in association with the BBC, teases: “Announcement on 2025 tour coming soon!”

Derby dance company Déda announces liquidation.

Derby-based dance company Déda has announced it is entering voluntary insolvency because of “significant financial pressures”.

The Arts Council England-funded charity – which runs a dance and movement venue as well as co-producing the annual Derby Festé festival – said it had become “impossible” to continue operations, with rising costs outpacing a slow recovery in audience numbers since the pandemic.

The liquidation is a “severe blow to our town’s cultural landscape” said one Derby resident who is campaigning for government and local council intervention to save the venue.

Former Déda chief executive and artistic director of Derby Festé, Steve Slater, described a “battle to make ends meet” back in May, when the organisation was forced to cancel the 2024 festival due to the “biting” cost-of-living crisis.

Despite this, Déda’s team called the dance company’s voluntary insolvency “news we never thought we would have to share”.

“The pandemic posed extraordinary challenges for cultural organisations worldwide, and Déda has not been immune,” a statement on the company’s website says.

“Audience numbers have not rebounded at the pace needed to offset the rising operational costs. This has placed an unsustainable strain on our resources, making it impossible to continue our operations in the current form.”

While trustees remain hopeful that a solution will be found to avoid closure of the venue by working with stakeholders and partners, Déda acknowledged that the livelihoods of its employees and artists had been jeopardised by the decision.

“It is our sincere hope that another cultural organisation in Derby will step forward to continue our dance programme and the good work we have started,” its statement concludes.

Déda’s chair, Corey Mwamba, has promised to help Derby’s arts community “move forward together”, while an Arts Council England spokesperson said the funding body would work with Derby City Council to “help to ensure the best outcome in this difficult situation”.

Déda’s most recent filing to Companies House last December maintained that the organisation was in a “strong cash position” despite an “astronomical” hike in energy bills, but noted that financial woes had proved stressful and damaged staff morale.

A petition to “save Derby’s main dance centre” in the wake of the liquidation has already gained more than 2,800 signatures.

The petition’s creator, Camille Mauduit, wrote: “The need of the hour is for the government and local council to intervene and establish a maintainable financial plan that would preserve Déda.

“We are not merely advocating for a dance centre; we are rallying for a cornerstone of our community that enriches the life and soul of Derby.”

I Wish You Well: The Gwyneth Paltrow Ski-Trial Musical announces West End transfer.

I Wish You Well: The Gwyneth Paltrow Ski-Trial Musical is heading to the West End.

The Edinburgh Fringe hit, which received a positive review from WhatsOnStage, will run at the Criterion Theatre from 11 September to 12 October 2024. It plays its final performance at Underbelly in Edinburgh this Monday, 26 August.

Penned by Roger Dipper and Rick Pearson, I Wish You Well is a four-hander parody that revolves around the infamous celebrity trial of Gwyneth Paltrow vs Terry Sanderson, following a ski slope collision.

The full Edinburgh cast is set to return for the West End run, including Diana Vickers (Dial M for Murder) as Gwyneth, Marc Antolin (Quiz) as Terry, Tori Allen-Martin (Wild About You) as Kristin and Idriss Kargbo (Wicked) as Judge Jude.

The production is directed by Shiv Rabheru and choreographed by Arlene Phillips, with musical direction by Debbi Clarke. It is produced by Paul Taylor-Mills.

BBC Strictly Come Dancing’s Kai Widdrington ‘pleased to announce’ as he reveals move after co-star ‘split’

Strictly Come Dancing star Kai Widdrington has revealed he’s own solo move after reports of a ‘split’ with co-star Nadiya Bychkova. The dancer is currently preparing for his return to the ballroom after he was announced back in June in the line-up of professional dancers returning for the 2024 series.

Last year, Kai was partnered with broadcasting legend Angela Rippon with the pair making it through to the iconic Blackpool week. The pair later headed on the Strictly Come Dancing Live 2024 tour which took place in arenas up and down the country earlier this year.

But it has now been a few weeks since the Strictly dancer began work on the upcoming series. Last month, they joined creative director Jason Gilkinson in rehearsals as they prepared the string of pro numbers that will feature throughout the series and set to be pre-recorded later this month.

But amid the hard work ahead of Strictly’s return next month (September), Kai wanted to share some news with his fans and so he took to Instagram to confirm his new show.

The 28-year-old revealed she will be hitting the road on a solo tour next year, titled EVOLUTION, which will be stopping at venues in Swansea, Doncaster, Leicester, Dublin, Belfast and Dublin in May and June 2025.

Alongside a post for the show, Kai wrote on Instagram: “Are you ready… I’m so pleased to announce I’m back for my own solo headline tour next year, it’s going to be bigger and better than ever! EVOLUTION…

“I’m looking forward to seeing old friends and new faces for more fun, laughter and dancing. I’m also pleased to say – Ireland I’m coming back to see you!! See you in 2025.”

We are back after our Summer break! Our Pro Dancer News reflects on the major dance events of the last month.

Aljaž Škorjanec returns to the Strictly Come Dancing Ballroom as a Professional Dancer.

 

Aljaž Škorjanec will return to the Strictly Come Dancing Ballroom as a Professional Dancer for the brand-new series. After a two year hiatus, fan favourite Aljaž is waltzing back onto our screens for the 20th year of the nation’s favourite dance show. The news was revealed this evening (Monday 8 July) on The One Show.

The multi-award-winning entertainment show, produced by BBC Studios, will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer for its new series this Autumn. As Strictly celebrates two spectacular decades of dance, this series promising to be extra special with even more glitz, glamour and unforgettable performances.

Aljaž Škorjanec is a World-Class Professional Dancer and a 19 time Slovenian champion in Ballroom, Latin and Ten dance, who graced the nation with his fancy footwork on Strictly for nine iconic series. Aljaž and his celebrity partner Abbey Clancy raised the Glitterball in his debut year on the show in 2013 and was a runner up in 2017 with partner, Gemma Atkinson.

Aljaž says: “I could not be more ecstatic to be back with the Strictly family! This year is such a special one for this legendary show, I can’t wait to be a part of it and make my return to the dancefloor. I had an absolute ball during my nine year stint on Strictly, during my time away I became a parent, which has been an exciting challenge in itself and now I’m ready to experience the Strictly magic again. It feels so right to be coming back, I missed the fun, glitter and the judges of course and I hope to make my daughter Lyra proud!”

Sarah James, Executive Producer of Strictly Come Dancing says: “We are all so thrilled that Aljaž is back in the Strictly Ballroom, bringing his incredible choreography and passion for dance. During his nine series he was a firm favourite with viewers across the country, I’m sure everyone is in for a treat as he joins us to entertain the nation for a very special 20th year of the show.”

Multiple reports suggest the Strictly pro was “sacked” after claims were made of gross misconduct towards his partner on last year’s series, Zara McDermott.

The Italian dancer had his contract terminated this week after a meeting with Strictly bosses.
A source close to the dancer said that he was “petrified and in a bad place”.

“He is being supported by his wife Giada and they are planning to pack up and move back to Italy,” they told the Media.

The 30-year-old earlier reacted to the claims with a statement on Instagram.
He said: “I deeply regret the events that led to my departure from Strictly.
“My intense passion and determination to win might have affected my training regime. Respecting the HR process, I understand it’s best for the show if I step away.
“While there are aspects of this story involving external influences that I can’t discuss at this time, I remain committed to being strong for my family and friends.
“I wish the Strictly family nothing but success in the future. I also want to thank everyone who has supported my career, both professional and personally. When the time is right, I will share my story.”

The 30-year-old was due to appear on the upcoming series until being contacted by the programme’s executives, who wanted to question him about his behaviour, with one show source saying: “Graziano had to go. It has been awful.”

Di Prima joined the show in 2018 and reached week six with Zara last year after reaching the quarter-final with actor Kym Marsh in 2022.

A BBC spokesperson confirmed that Di Prima was “no longer a part of the line-up of professional dancers for the upcoming series”.

The Greatest Showman circus show announces London venue, dates and details.

Details and dates have been revealed for the new musical circus show coming to London, inspired by The Greatest Showman.

The circus event is based on the 2017 film which starred Hugh Jackman, Zendaya, Michelle Williams and Zac Efron, with numbers including “This Is Me” and “From Now On”. It has a completely original story by Jenny Bicks, with songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

The film followed the famous P T Barnum, a pioneering circus owner who made it big in the US.

From the mind of creative director Simon Hammerstein, Come Alive! The Greatest Showman will be opening at the Empress Museum in London’s Earls Court (near West Brompton station), beginning performances on 23 September 2024. The age rating for the show is ten plus.

It will be presented inside a dedicated 700-seat big top space, featuring circus performers and musical theatre stars from the West End and beyond. A pre-sale will begin on 17 July, with general sale from 18 July.

Hammerstein is joined on the creative team by music producer and Olivier Award-nominated Matthew Brind (Paddington 2, Just For One Day), lead choreographer Jerry Reeve (The Voice UK, the Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Party at the Palace) and Emmy Award-nominated lighting designer Adam Bassett for Woodroffe Basset Design (London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, Adele – Live).

Murmurings of a direct stage adaptation of the film have been rumbling along for years, especially after the blockbuster’s major box office haul.

Six the Musical cast recordings reach a milestone achievement.

The producers of the WhatsOnStage Award-winning hit musical Six, written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, have announced that the show’s UK and Broadway cast recordings have now been collectively streamed over a billion times.

The UK studio cast recording was released in 2018 and features the vocals of Renée Lamb (as Catherine of Aragon), Christina Modestou (as Anne Boleyn), Natalie Paris (as Jane Seymour), Genesis Lynea (as Anna of Cleves), Aimie Atkinson (as Catherine Howard), and Izuka Hoyle (as Catherine Parr).

It has orchestrations by Tom Curran and is produced by Sam Featherstone, Marlow, Moss and Joe Beighton, with executive producers George Stiles and Paul Lisberg.

The Grammy-nominated Six: Live on Opening Night marked the first time an original Broadway cast recording to ever be recorded live on an opening night. It debuted at number one on the Billboard cast album charts and is produced by Paul Gatehouse, alongside Marlow, Moss, Featherstone, and Curran.

The album features the original Broadway Queens (Adrianna Hicks, Andrea Macasaet, Abby Mueller, Brittney Mack, Samantha Pauly, and Anna Uzele), as well as a bonus track by the original Broadway alternates (Keirsten Nicole Hodgens, Nicole Kyoung-Mi Lambert, Courtney Mack, and Mallory Maedke).

Six the Musical reimagines the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives as pop stars, blending historical heartbreak with modern empowerment in an 80-minute theatrical experience.

On the global stage, Six is celebrating its third year on Broadway at the Lena Horne Theatre, alongside a North American tour and a second Australian tour opening in Melbourne. The musical has also seen performances in South Korea, Las Vegas, Amsterdam, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland and is also scheduled to visit Singapore, the Philippines, and Japan. In the UK, the West End production continues its successful run at the Vaudeville Theatre.

Six has won over 35 major international awards, including the 2022 Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design. It also secured consecutive WhatsOnStage Awards for Best West End Show in 2022 and 2023, and the 2020 BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical.

It is co-directed by Moss and Jamie Armitage, and features choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille. The design team includes set designer Emma Bailey, costume designer Gabriella Slade, lighting designer Tim Deiling, and sound designer Paul Gatehouse.

The score features orchestrations by Curran, with music supervision and vocal arrangements by Beighton. Musical director Yutong Zhang and associate UK musical supervisor Lauren Hopkinson round out the team. Casting is by Pearson Casting.

Six is produced by Kenny Wax, Wendy and Andy Barnes, and Stiles.

Back to the Future announces new cast and West End extension.

A new cohort of cast members are joining Back to the Future: The Musical.

The critically acclaimed show, which has won multiple awards for Best New Musical, is entering its fourth year. It first opened in London on 13 September 2021, began performances on Broadway on 30 June 2023, while a North American tour launched in Cleveland, Ohio, in June 2024 and will run in cities across the US and Canada until August 2025. The musical also has plans for international productions, starting with Japan in 2025.

The new cast features recent graduate Vasco Emauz as Marty McFly, making his West End debut, Orlando Gibbs as George McFly, CJ Borger as Goldie Wilson and Marvin Berry, Alex Runicles as Biff Tannen, Talia Palamathanan as Jennifer Parker, Ellis Kirk as alternate Marty McFly, and Liam McHugh as Dave McFly. Ensemble members include Kofi Aidoo-Appiah, Billie Bowman, and Gracie Caine.

Continuing cast members include Cory English as Doctor Emmett Brown, Sarah Goggin as Lorraine Baines, Lee Ormsby as Strickland and alternate Doctor Emmett Brown, and Patricia Wilkins as Linda McFly. Ensemble members Ella Beaumont, Sia Dauda, Alexander Day, Helen Gulston, Matthew Ives, Connor Lewis, Adam Margilewski, Bryan Mottram, Anna Murray, Samuel Nicholas, Louis Quinn, Zachkiel Smith, Grace Swaby-Moore, and Alexandra Wright will also return.

The show has also extended its run at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End through to Sunday 27 July 2025. Tickets are now on sale.

The original cast recording, released by Sony Music’s Masterworks Broadway label, is now available and has surpassed 20 million streams.

It features new music by multi-Grammy Award winners Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, alongside classic songs from the movie, including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode.”

The show features a book by Bob Gale and is directed by Tony Award-winning director John Rando (Urinetown, On The Town), alongside the multi-Tony and Olivier Award-winning design team of Tim Hatley (set and costume design), Tim Lutkin (lighting), Hugh Vanstone (lighting consultant), Gareth Owen (sound) and Finn Ross (video), with choreography by Chris Bailey, musical supervision and arrangements by Nick Finlow and Illusions by Chris Fisher. Breakdancing is set to steal the show in its Olympic Games debut at Paris 2024.

 

The world’s best B-Boys and B-Girls are descending on Paris this summer as breaking makes its debut at the Olympic Games.

With its roots in 1970s New York City hip-hop culture, breaking (you might know it as ‘break dancing’) is like nothing ever seen before at the Olympics.

The fast-paced and dynamic sport is rapidly rising in popularity across the world and now has the chance to demonstrate exactly why.

Why is breaking at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games?

Breaking is the latest youth-focused sport to be added to the Olympic programme as organisers aim to make the Games more inclusive and accessible than ever before.

Other sports that have been added in an attempt to draw a younger audience to the Olympics include skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing, 3×3 basketball and BMX freestyle, all of which will return to the Games after featuring for the first time at Tokyo 2020.

In addition, breaking was selected because it contributes to a gender-balanced Olympic Games, with an equal measure of B-Boys and B-Girls competing in the sport. This is now a key criteria for organisers when determining the Olympic programme.

A test run was held for breaking at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. The event was considered a great success and breaking was put forward as a sport for Paris 2024 shortly after.
What are the Olympic rules for breaking?

The breaking competition at Paris 2024 will feature two events — one for men and one for women. In total there will be 32 athletes — or ‘breakers’ — divided up into 16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls.

They will compete in one-on-one battles, taking it in turns to perform during 60-second ‘throw downs’. Most major breaking competitions have two or three throw downs in each battle, increasing to five in the final.

The breakers are rated by a panel of judges, who are usually respected members of the breaking community. The performances are evaluated using six criteria — creativity, personality, technique, variety, stage presence and musicality.

Technique, stage presence, and creativity collectively contribute 60 per cent to the final score, while the remaining 40 per cent is determined by the other three criteria.

The breaker with the highest score progresses to the next stage of the competition.
What are the main moves used by breakers?

The DJ is a crucial aspect of the sport, with breakers required to improvise to the beat of the music. They will combine three basic elements into their routine — toprock, freeze and downrock.

Toprock refers to all moves performed standing up, while freeze is when a breaker stops in the middle of their performance in an unusual position, such as on their hands or head.

Downrock is the most crucial element, as it refers to the moves performed on the floor. This includes power moves, which are considered the centrepiece of a routine. These acrobatic moves normally involve breakers spinning their whole body on their hands, elbows, back, head or shoulders, and require strength and flexibility.

Strictly Come Dancing star Craig Revel Horwood to release debut solo album.

Strictly Come Dancing star Craig Revel Horwood has announced a surprise new venture.

The TV personality, who has been a judge on the BBC competition since its debut episode in 2004, will release his debut solo album Revelations: Songs Boys Don’t Sing later this year.

On Monday (17 June), Horwood released the debut single from the record, a cover of Dame Shirley Bassey’s 1968 song “This Is My Life”.

The album features covers of tracks usually associated with female singers. Songs include “On My Own” from Les Misérables, “Don’t Rain On My Parade” from Funny Girl and “Little Girls” from Annie, which Horwood has performed as Miss Hannigan while touring the musical in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2023.

Revelations: Songs Boys Don’t Sing will be released on 18 October. This will coincide with the next series of Strictly, which is due to start the month before.

Choreographer Akram Khan launches podcast Move to Live.

Choreographer Akram Khan will front a new podcast set to explore “the transformative power of movement” in the arts.

The weekly podcast, Move to Live, will see Khan interview guests including actor Andy Serkis and Royal Ballet principal Francesca Hayward about how movement fuels their creativity and well-being.

Designer Es Devlin, actor Khalid Abdalla and theatremaker Kathryn Hunter will also feature on the podcast series, which is presented by Marquee TV and Tandem Productions.

Available from June 5, the first episode includes an interview with Khan himself, exploring his “concerns for future generations if dance and movement continue to be neglected in the school curriculum”.

Announcing Move to Live, Khan said: “As a dancer, choreographer and director, I’ve made movement my life’s work. I’m fascinated by how the way we move affects the way we live and how the way we live shapes our movement.

“I’ve loved having this opportunity to explore this on the podcast with some truly wonderful guests and hope it inspires others to think more about their relationship to movement and dance.”

The podcast marks the latest collaboration between Khan and Marquee TV, with the choreographer recently acting as a guest curator on the streaming site, on which his first full-length ballet Giselle for English National Ballet is currently one of the most popular dance titles.

The first episode of Move to Live will be available on all podcast platforms and Marquee TV from June 5, with other episodes released weekly on Wednesdays until July 24.

Protesters denounce cuts to live music by Northern Ballet.

Protesters clad in Shakespeare costumes have marched on Sadler’s Wells to denounce cuts to Northern Ballet’s live orchestra.

Approximately 25 musicians turned up at the London venue, ahead of the first performance of Northern Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet on May 28.

The Shakespearean tragedy is the first touring production impacted by the company’s move towards recorded music thanks to rising touring costs.

Although Sadler’s Wells audiences will enjoy live accompaniment, subsequent touring locations including Canterbury and Newcastle will not.

Campaigners against the changes include the Musicians’ Union. It organised the protest and says axing Northern Ballet Sinfonia is no solution to a national arts funding crisis. Instead, they are calling for urgent intervention from the likes of Arts Council England to save jobs and safeguard live music.

Demonstrator Mary Gilbert, an oboist, said it felt “necessary” to “take a stand” after working for Northern Ballet for 25 years.

She said: “Those of us protesting have a great sense of pride in what we do. Live music is ballet’s heart and soul – even Shakespeare wrote most of his plays around the performing of music. It is integral to telling the story, guiding the actors and captivating audiences.

“With my job in the lurch and income looking uncertain, it has made for a stressful time when combined with our current economic climate. We believe in bringing the full live ballet to regional audiences in the UK and will be continuing our campaigning efforts to do so.”

Naomi Pohl, general secretary of the MU, commented: “The protest is a statement that we will continue applying pressure until Northern Ballet and Arts Council England agree a realistic funding solution that protects jobs and keeps live music at the heart of Northern Ballet productions.

“Musicians’ livelihoods are on the line – with our data showing that musicians, on average, make £20,000 a year, you can imagine that any negative impact on this income is felt very heavily. It impacts their ability to provide for themselves, their families, and their capacity to invest in their art.”

She continued: “The fear is that this cut is a slippery slope and a recording being used in place of the company’s orchestra is a precedent our members will not tolerate. It isn’t a position we want to be in, we understand the company needs more financial support, and urgently. With a general election announced, this is a key moment for us to make our case and ensure the arts are prioritised in any new government’s recovery plan.”

More than 18,000 members of the public have now signed an MU and Northern Ballet Sinfonia petition calling for a “realistic funding solution” to protect “world-class musicians” at the company.

Northern Ballet has attributed changes to its set-up to “an incredibly challenging financial environment”, with the decision hitting not only Sinfonia players but up to 200 musicians in the reserves pool according to a BBC report last year.

Earlier this year, the company had said it was “actively fundraising and lobbying key stakeholders” to ensure that future audiences across the UK would be able to enjoy “large-scale ballet accompanied by live music”.

A Northern Ballet spokesperson said: “Last year Northern Ballet had to make the difficult decision to enter into negotiations with Northern Ballet Sinfonia and the Musicians’ Union to reassess the amount of live music that could accompany our national tours from April 2024. This decision was not taken lightly but in response to an incredibly challenging financial environment where inflation and rising costs have made our traditional touring model unsustainable. As a Company touring widely with a large number of dancers, musicians and other staff we have been particularly exposed to inflation in all areas of operation.

“Live music remains central to the artistic vision of Northern Ballet and we are working to ensure that our Sinfonia will perform with us on our national tours as much as is possible. However, in an environment where many arts organisations are facing hard choices to ensure sustainability, we will be performing to a mixed programme of live and recorded music in the coming year.

“Since our previous update, we have undertaken additional fundraising initiatives which, alongside other measures, will enable live music to be performed by our Sinfonia for the full tour of Romeo and Juliet in spring 2024 (Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Norwich, London).

“Autumn performances of Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and in Southampton, Canterbury and Newcastle in September 2024 will be performed to recorded music. The tour of A Christmas Carol will be performed to recorded music and the tour of Jane Eyre will be performed to live music from Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

“We are very conscious of the uncertainty and distress these ongoing negotiations are causing for Sinfonia members and the company at large and would like to thank the players as well as the MU for their cooperation during this difficult time. We remain committed to performing to and commissioning new live music for our work and continue to work in dialogue with our Sinfonia and the MU to achieve this.

“We are actively fundraising and lobbying key stakeholders on this issue to ensure that in future audiences in towns and cities across the UK will be able to experience large scale ballet accompanied by live music. The cultural sector in the UK is under extreme financial pressure from many directions and more than ever we would like to thank our audiences and supporters for continuing to stand alongside us, and crucially for continuing to buy tickets to experience our work.”

BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2024 lineup rumours so far from Hannah Waddingham to Roman Kemp.

Strictly Come Dancing won’t hit screens until the autumn, yet talk has already turned to who could be competing this year.

The hit BBC dance competition is busy securing its lineup for its 22nd series and while the official list is still yet to be released, many celebrities are rumoured to be taking part. They will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Coronation Street’s Ellie Leach, who took home the 2023 Glitterball trophy with Vito Coppola.

The confirmed professional dancers are also waiting to be unveiled. Following the last series, there has been speculation over whether Giovanni Pernice will return after former contestants have spoke out against him. It comes after reports he is “too intense” to train and dance with, which emerged following his recent pairing with actress Amanda Abbington.

• “Why Am I So Single” announced full casting for its West End premiere. It will star Jo Foster and Leesa Tulley, with Jordan Cambridge-Taylor and Collette Guitart as alternate leads. The show has choreography by Ellen Kane and Michael Naylor, with Ebony Clarke as the resident choreographer. It opens at the Garrick Theatre on the 27th of August.
• “The Devil Wears Prada” revealed the complete cast for its UK premiere at Plymouth on the 6th of July. It has choreography by Jerry Mitchell and Gabby Antrobus is the dance captain.
• From the 2nd of September, Gina Beck will assume the role of Sarah Brown at “Guys and Dolls” at the Bridge theatre.
• The cast has been set for “Who Do Ya Love” which will premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. It has choreography by Lisa Stevens and Demmileigh Foster.
• Justin Peck won the Tony Award for Best Choreography for his work on “Illinoise”.

• The full casting has been revealed for “Dear Evan Hanson”. The show has choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille and will open at the Nottingham Playhouse on the 9th of September ahead of a UK tour.
• The Curve Theatre in Leicester has announced the UK premiere of “Muriel’s Wedding The Musical”. The show will be choreographed by Andrew Hallsworth and will run from the 10th of April until the 10th of May 2025.
• The world premiere of “Wild Rose” will run from the 6th of March until the 5th of April at the Lyceum theatre in Scotland. It has choreography by Steven Hoggett.

Strictly Come Dancing celebrates 20 years of dance magic on the BBC with brand new anniversary show

It promises a journey through 20 years of unforgettable entertainment featuring iconic performances and plenty of heart-warming interviews with past celebrity stars, professional dancers, and judges

Strictly Come Dancing, the iconic BBC Entertainment series and one of the UK’s most cherished programmes, is gearing up to celebrate two decades of glitz, glamour and memorable moves with a special episode coming to BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year.

Made by BBC Studios Entertainment Productions, an unmissable one-off programme has been commissioned that promises a journey through 20 years of unforgettable entertainment featuring iconic performances and plenty of heart-warming interviews with past celebrity stars, professional dancers, and judges.

Since the first episode debuted on BBC One on the evening of Saturday 15 May 2004, Strictly Come Dancing has gone on to not only become a critically acclaimed and multi-award winning hit – with the most recent win coming at the weekend as the show won in the Best Entertainment category for the third time at the BAFTA TV Awards 2024 – but it has also become a global phenomenon, licensed to 61 territories and becoming a truly great British export.

BBC Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden supported as she says how doctor’s words changed life forever.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden has been supported as she marked a year since she was diagnosed with cancer.

The Welsh dancer was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and underwent a mastectomy and fertility treatment. The 33-year-old has taken to social media as she reflected on her health battle.

She said: “These past few weeks and especially days I’ve constantly been thinking this time last year I was having this test, or this appointment. A year ago today it was confirmed what we thought it was but it became reality and my life changed forever when the Dr said we are sorry Amy it’s cancer.

“I can’t believe it’s been a year and all what my body has been through and achieved. A year ago Ben, myself and my twin sister cried together and had to pull ourselves together as we had to break the news to my parents and just knowing the heartache and worry it was going to cause.

“I used to lay awake for hours with my mind going to all sorts of places, would I make it to Christmas, would I dance again, how’s Ben going to cope, I don’t want to lose my hair , you name it. I wish I knew then how I would be a year on. I told myself constantly this too shall pass and a year on, my hair growing back, my energy getting better and better, back dancing and most importantly spending time with my family and friends and appreciating life.

“I have a new body I’m still learning to accept and like, but do you know what it got me through the hardest time and I’m so proud of myself. Too many people are affected by cancer and I’ll do all I can now to raise awareness and give back. To those struggling right now I’m sending you love and strength.

“To those family and friends who stuck by me I’m forever grateful to you! I know I’m lucky and blessed for another shot at life, here’s to a healthier, better, happier and dancing year ahead! …. Now a gentle reminder have you checked your chest this month? Early detection can save lives.”

Amy’s co-stars took to the comments to send messages of support after the update. Dianne Buswell said: “Love you.”

Craig Revel Horwood added: “Sending all the love my darling.” Fleur East posted: “Warrior.”

La La Land stage musical ‘in the middle of workshops.

Award-winning director Bartlett Sher is currently in the UK overseeing the eagerly anticipated and huge new revival of Kiss Me, Kate – but he also had time to give a few juicy tidbits on another musical endeavour – the stage version of La La Land.

The winner of six Academy Awards including Best Original Score and Best Original Song, the much-loved film starred Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a jazz musician and an actress struggling to make ends meet in Hollywood. Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, the film has a score by Justin Hurwitz with lyrics by Dear Evan Hansen writing duo Pasek and Paul. Numbers include “Someone In The Crowd”, “City of Stars” and “Another Day of Sun”.

The stage production was first revealed last February, with Sher (To Kill a Mockingbird, The King and I) on directing duties. The book was set to come courtesy of Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar and Matthew Decker. Since then, the situation has been a bit quieter.

Until now – Sher gave us a small an insight into the current state of proceedings, confirming the show is very much still in development: “I am still working on La La Land. We are working with producer Marc Platt, who is also the producer of Wicked, so it’s the same group.”

He continued: “We’re in the middle of workshops and trying to find a theatrical language for this amazing film. So we’re in the middle of that right now, and when I’m done with this [Kiss Me, Kate], I go back to New York for some more workshops.”

Performance dates are unknown – and it will be fascinated to see who is in those workshops… Hopefully London will follow New York!

Giovanni Pernice declares ‘we are back’ as Strictly co-star wraps arms around him for hug.

Giovanni Pernice has declared ‘we are back’ following claims he is leaving Strictly Come Dancing while facing allegations about his training room techniques.

In a new video, fellow Strictly star Anton Du Beke wrapped his arms around the Italian dancer, hugging him with glee as they spoke about their upcoming tour with excitement.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the BBC programme was launching an investigation into Giovanni’s behaviour following accusations from three celebrities who he was previously partnered up with on the competition.

It was claimed that his former partners Ranvir Singh, Laura Whitmore and Amanda Abbington – the last of whom withdrew from Strictly prematurely in 2023 – met up to ‘compare notes’ about their experiences with him.

In a recent statement shared on social media, Giovanni, 33, said that he rejected ‘any suggestion of abusive or threatening behaviour’, adding that he was looking forward to ‘clearing his name’ of any wrongdoing.

• The Leeds Playhouse will host the world premiere of “Coraline – A Musical” from the 11th of April to the 11th of May 2025 before the show embarks on a UK tour. The choreography is by EJ Boyle.
• “Dorian: The Musical” will have its world premiere at Southwalk Playhouse from the 4th of July until the 10th of August. Alfie Friedman will play Dorian.
• The hit Broadway musical “Something Rotten” is coming to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on the 5th & 6th of August, starring Jason Manford.

Strictly’s Karen Hauer and Gorka Márquez team up for new tour.

 

Strictly Come Dancing stars Karen Hauer and Gorka Márquez have announced that they are teaming up for a new tour.

The professional dancer will front Speakeasy, a new show that contains various styles, ranging from clandestine New York Speakeasy to the sultry Havana dance floors and from the Burlesque Cabaret Clubs of the mid-1900s to the glittering mirror balls of Studio 54.

As per the logline, Speakeasy will be a “delicious dance experience” where audiences can “Mamba, Salsa, Charleston, Foxtrot and Samba the night away”, with the show promising an “undercover world of elegance and iconic dance flavours.”

“Partnering again on a new tour with my good friend Gorka is so exciting, and we can’t wait for audiences up and down the UK to see what we’ve put together for them,” said Karen. “We’re bringing a new look and feel to this show; all-new music, dances, and a theme where we’ll be bringing you behind a secret door for an evening of total entertainment and escapism.

“We are also absolutely thrilled that for the first time, we will be taking our tour to the West End. It’s shaping up to be the most incredible adventure, and we can’t wait for people to join us on the journey.”

“I’m so excited to be going back on the road with Karen and seeing everybody across the UK. We’re going to immerse the audience in an undercover world of dance, and I can’t wait!” added Gorka in a statement.

The tour will begin on February 24, 2025, in Dartford, running through to the final show at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall on April 13, 2025. Further details can be found on the Speakeasy website, including information on Friday’s (April 26) pre-sale.

The Rocky Horror Show, starring Jason Donovan, is heading to the West End later this year.

Jason Donovan, whose stage credits include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Grease, will star as Dr Frank ‘n’ Furter in the cult classic musical for the first time in the UK for over 25 years. He also played the role in Sydney in 2023.

Donovan commented: “I am thrilled to dive into the exhilarating role of Frank ‘n’ Furter with a fantastic new cast and Timewarp with audiences throughout the UK. We promise to deliver the freshest Rocky EVER, that audiences will not forget. So, buckle up, as the show promises to be a wild and wicked ride!”

First seen in June 1973 at the Royal Court, the piece has been seen by over 30 million people worldwide in more than 30 countries and translated into 20 languages.

The Rocky Horror Show features tunes including “Sweet Transvestite”, “Science Fiction/Double Feature”, “Dammit Janet” and “The Time-Warp”. It follows squeaky-clean college kids Brad and Janet who take refuge in a mysterious house after their car breaks down and experience a night they will never forget.

Christopher Luscombe’s production runs in the West End at the Dominion Theatre from 6 to 20 September, following stints in Bromley (19 to 24 August) and High Wycombe (27 to 31 August).

It will then continue to Fareham, Malvern, Bath, York, Glasgow, Cardiff, Woking, Blackpool, Sheffield, Liverpool for the festive season (3 December to 4 January), Southend, Edinburgh and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Donovan is not currently scheduled to appear in Malvern, Woking and Liverpool, and on the following dates: 30 August, 28 October, and 4, 5 and 23 November.

Kym Marsh to star in 101 Dalmatians musical tour.

A touring musical version of 101 Dalmatians is hitting the open road later this year – and lead casting has been announced.

Based on the production that played at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in the summer of 2022 (though now reworked), the piece is written by Douglas Hodge (music and lyrics) and Johnny McKnight (book), from a stage adaptation by Zinnie Harris.

It tells the story of a couple who find themselves surrounded by a tidal wave of dogs – only for the canines in question to be then coveted by the notorious fashionista Cruella de Vil.

Taking on the role of de Vil will be Coronation Street legend Kym Marsh, who said today: “I’m over the moon to be joining the cast of 101 Dalmatians playing the iconic Cruella de Vil, has there ever been a more fabulous baddie?! Obviously she’s a million miles away from me in real life – and my dogs are very glad about that – but being able to bring to life my take on this renowned character is a real treat. Douglas and Johnny have written this brilliant new musical filled with songs I’m already finding myself humming under my breath. The 101 Dalmatians story spans generations and I’m sure young and old alike will absolutely love this production.”

The show will open in Wimbledon on 22 June 2024, before visiting Birmingham, Norwich, Canterbury, Leicester, Manchester, Belfast, Wolverhampton, Newcastle, Southend, Dublin, Liverpool, Milton Keynes, Woking, Cardiff, Southampton, Aberdeen, York, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Oxford and Brighton.

Kym Marsh will not be appearing in Norwich, Canterbury, Leicester, Wolverhampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Oxford and Brighton.

Roald Dahl’s The Enormous Crocodile musical reveals its London cast.

Casting is confirmed for the London premiere of Roald Dahl’s The Enormous Crocodile.

Co-produced by The Roald Dahl Story Company, Leeds Playhouse (where it received its world premiere staging last December) and Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, the family-friendly musical features a score by Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab (who performs under the band name Sinkane), book and lyrics by Suhayla El-Bushra, and additional music and lyrics, orchestrations, arrangements and musical supervision by Tom Brady. It tells the tale of a hungry crocodile searching for a delicious child to snap up for dinner.

Appearing at Regent’s Park will be Joanna Adaran (marking her professional stage debut) as Trunky, Audrey Brisson (Into the Woods, Amélie The Musical) as Roly Poly Bird, Laura Buhagiar (Seize the Cheese: A New Musical) as Swing, Malinda Parris (The Little Big Things, & Juliet) as The Enormous Crocodile, Nuwan Hugh Perera (The Lord of the Rings, Life of Pi) as Humpy Rumpy, and Elise Zavou (Heathers, Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World) as Muggle Wump/Teacher.

The show includes a “menagerie of mischievous puppets” by leading designer Toby Olié (who previously worked on 101 Dalmatians at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and also co-directs).

Additionally, the production features set and costumes by Fly Davis, choreography by Vicki Igbokwe-Ozoagu, lighting design by Jessica Hung Han Yun, sound design by Tom Gibbons, musical direction by Màth Roberts, associate direction by Tash Holway, and associate puppet design and puppet supervision by Daisy Beattie.

Phij Adams serves as music technologist and ambleton programmer, with Johnny Edwards as associate sound designer, James Hasset as season associate sound designer, Aundrea Fudge as voice coach, Avye Leventis as associate puppetry director, Emily Lim as developer and director, and Bryony Jarvis Taylor as casting director.

The Enormous Crocodile runs at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre from 17 May until 8 June 2024, with a press performance scheduled for 22 May.

Wicked becomes tenth longest-running show in West End history.

Wicked will become the tenth longest-running show in the West End.

The show, which continues its open-ended run at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, will play its 6762nd performance – overtaking No Sex Please, We’re British, which ran from June 1971 until September 1987, playing a total of 6,761 performances.

The musical, which has received over 100 global awards, features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, with the book by Winnie Holzman. Wayne Cilento handles musical staging, and Joe Mantello directs the production. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, it offers a unique perspective on the characters from L Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Dianne Buswell reunites with Bobby Brazier for ‘special’ dance’.

 

Dianne Buswell and Bobby Brazier have reunited for a ‘special’ dance months after competing together on Strictly Come Dancing. The pair, who were contestants on the latest series of the BBC dance contest, appeared back together in a day that pro dancer Dianne described as ‘pure joy’.

Dianne and Bobby made it to the Strictly final alongside actor Layton Williams, who was paired with professional Nikita Kuzmin, and Coronation Street star Ellie Leach alongside her pro partner Vito Coppola. Despite their success on the show and support from fans, Dianne and Bobby were pipped to the post by Ellie and Vito.

Although they didn’t get to the lift the Glitterball trophy, the pair struck up a close friendship and have remained friends since leaving the show. Dianne and Bobby also danced together again during the live Strictly tour, which ended in February, alongside their fellow Strictly 2023 finalists and a number of their series co-stars.

After finishing life on the road together, the dance couple have now reunited once again with a wholesome visit to a care home. The EastEnders actor and professional dancer visited the home to speak to residents and show off their signature dance moves.

Sharing a video of their ‘special’ time with her 1 million followers on Instagram, Dianne wrote: “Today was just pure joy to see how happy they all were to have us really was special. And I got to have another little dance with the bobsta still didn’t quite get that lift tho did we [laughing face emoji]. Thanks for having us @bobbybrazier.”

In the video, Bobby could be seen twirling a woman around whilst Dianne danced with a beaming man. The pair then showed off their moves with the care home residents clapping and cheering them along, whilst Dianne said: “Show them your hips Bobby.”

Reacting to the sweet video, one fan @keleye76 commented: “This is just wonderful to see… Humanity at its finest. P.S. I lost my Mum in October and she never got to see how far you both got in Strictly, I’m sorry she missed that. She also loved that song ‘Green Door’ by Shakin Stevens so this made me smile even more.”

Bobby’s dad Jeff Brazier wrote: “A million [heart emoji]‘s YES,” as his wife Kate Brazier added: “My heart”. @strictly_jaljaz wrote: “The smiles on their faces, I adore this,” as @eddo_official said: “This is very special to my heart. After losing my gran I could see in the last times I saw her how much song would bring her happiness and joy right until the last time. Can imagine all these guys finding so much joy and happiness seeing you two dancing to such amazing songs. How very special xxxxx.”

Sunset Boulevard has scooped seven wins at the Olivier Awards 2024.

Sunset Boulevard has scooped seven wins at the Olivier Awards 2024, with its stars Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis winning best actress and best actor in a musical for their respective performances.

The awards, presented in partnership with Mastercard, took place at the Royal Albert Hall on April 14, with Hannah Waddingham once more as master of ceremonies.

Sunset Boulevard picked up the most gongs of the evening, nabbing the prizes for categories including best director for Jamie Lloyd, best musical revival, best lighting for Jack Knowles and best sound design for Adam Fisher.

Kinky Boots returns with new production starring Johannes Radebe.

Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe is to play Lola in a new production of musical Kinky Boots.

The show, with music by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein, will open at Curve in Leicester on January 17, 2025, before touring.

It will visit venues such as the New Victoria Theatre in Woking, the Palace Theatre in Manchester and the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin. It is currently scheduled to run until July, ending at the New Theatre in Oxford.

It will be directed by Curve artistic director Nikolai Foster and will also star Dan Partridge as Charlie Price.

Cyndi Lauper said: “Kinky Boots is one of the things I’m proudest of in my career, and I’m so excited that audiences will get to see it again, in a new production. It’s like a happy pill – and we could all use some of that right now. I can’t think of a better time or place to relaunch this special show in its place of origin.”

Fierstein added: “An all new production is a thrilling event in the life of a well-loved show. And to have that rebirth occur in the place of its origin makes it all a billion times more exciting. I can’t wait to welcome Kinky Boots home.”

Curve chief executive Chris Stafford and artistic director Foster added that they were “beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to create a brand-new Kinky Boots at the Curve”, adding that it would be “returning the story to its native Midlands and manufacturing heartland of Leicester, where our theatre proudly stands today”.

“This is a story of British industrial heritage, told through Fierstein’s fiercely intelligent words, and Lauper’s explosive songs, in a truly joyful musical about overcoming adversity, celebrating individuality, the power of a good pair of heels and community spirit,” they added.

It has choreography by Leah Hill, set and costume design by Robert Jones, lighting design by Ben Cracknell, sound design by Adam Fisher and casting by Harry Blumenau.

Six the Musical extends West End run into 2025 and confirms post-show karaoke.

Award-winning musical Six has extended its current West End run into 2025 and has released details for a one-night-only post-show karaoke event.

The West End production is set to team up with its Broadway counterpart on 6 June 2024 to host a one-night-only post-show karaoke called “Six Karaoke (You Have A Voice).” The London host for the event will be cast member Hannah Lowther.

Fans will have the opportunity to perform their favourite song from the show on the Vaudeville Theatre stage (or the Lena Horne Theatre stage in New York). To enter, fans are invited to post a clip of themselves singing a number from Six to Instagram Reels/TikTok, tag the show @sixthemusical and use the hashtags #YouHaveAVoice and #SIXWestEndKaraoke.

The West End production will also hold two new sing-along performances on 12 January 2025 and 4 May 2025, in addition to the upcoming sing-alongs on 12 May 2024 and 25 August 2024.

Producer Kenny Wax commented: “We’re absolutely delighted to be extending our reign in London, providing audiences with even more opportunities to Get Down with our incredible queens and live band until May 2025. Strictly dancer Giovanni Pernice defends himself over controversy.

 

Giovanni Pernice has vowed to stay on Strictly Come Dancing amid backlash from ex dance partners who held a ‘summit’ to discuss his behaviour. The Italian dance pro has been embroiled in crisis as a trio of celebrity women have reportedly ‘shed tears’ and discussed the possibility of ‘formally’ complaining to the BBC about his interactions with them.
However, the 33-year-old dancer has remained defiant, telling the Radio Times last week that he’s not quitting the BBC show.

When asked, alongside Strictly judge Anton Du Beke, if they would quit the ballroom series, he said: ‘Why would we do that? We love our jobs. It’s one of the best shows on television and we get to do our own shows, too.’

Pernice had been partnered with Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington, 52, last year before she sensationally quit the series five weeks later for ‘personal reasons’. She later claimed that she had been ‘suffering from PTSD’ after her time on the show and made a complaint to the BBC , which she has since withdrawn.

She recently held an ‘emotional summit’ with Pernice’s former partners Ranvir Singh and Laura Whitmore where they ‘compared notes’ about their time being paired up with him.
Abbington was also considering instructing an experienced lawyer to help her prepare a legal letter to the BBC to aid her obtaining the rehearsal footage, the paper claimed.

‘There is every possibility all three could take it further and formally complain to the BBC, but for now they’re comforting each other,’ a source told the publication.
‘Only a handful of people will understand what it’s like to be trained by Giovanni and in the industry he is regarded as a “perfectionist”.

Taylor Swift has joined Elon Musk as ranking among the world’s wealthiest people, according to a new rich list.
The American pop star entered the Forbes World’s Billionaires List for the first time with $1.1bn (£877m)

Singer-songwriter Swift entered the rich list after achieving megastar status. She stole the show at this year’s Grammy Awards, becoming the first performer to win the prize for album of the year four times.
Her album 1989 (Taylor’s Version) was also the best-selling vinyl LP of last year.

Swift’s success is not just confined to the world of music. Her mere presence at American football games to watch her boyfriend Travis Kelce has been credited with raising NFL viewing figures.

ITV show ‘axed’ after failing to compete with BBC Strictly Come Dancing.

ITV bosses have reportedly made the decision to axed The Masked Dancer as it failed to compete with BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and will now only continue with The Masked Singer.

After just two series, despite a “reset” the show, which inspired The Masked Singer, will no longer be aired after first launching in 2021. However, The Masked Singer, which has panelists including Davina McCaall, Mo Gilligan, Jonathan Ross and Rita Ora, will continue, as it has proved a complete success.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow extends West End run.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow at the Phoenix Theatre has extended its run through to the end of the year.

Unlike the ’80s-inspired TV series, the stage prequel is set in 1959 with characters including a young Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado, Bob Newby and Henry Creel (played respectively by Harbour, Winona Ryder, Sean Astin and Jamie Campbell Bower on screen).

Featuring an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry, Stranger Things: The First Shadow is penned by Trefry and directed by Stephen Daldry, with co-direction by Justin Martin. It has received rave reviews across the board, including from WhatsOnStage, being described as a “major visual spectacle”

The West End cast includes Shane Attwooll as Chief Hopper, Kemi Awoderu as Sue Anderson, Chase Brown as Lonnie Byers, Christopher Buckley as Bob Newby, Ammar Duffus as Charles Sinclair, Gilles Geary as Ted Wheeler, Florence Guy as Karen Childress, Max Harwood as Alan Munson, Michael Jibson as Victor Creel, Oscar Lloyd as James Hopper Jr, Louis McCartney as Henry Creel, Isabella Pappas as Joyce Maldonado, Matthew Pidgeon as Principal Newby, Calum Ross as Walter Henderson, Maisie Norma Seaton as Claudia Yount, Patrick Vaill as Dr Brenner, Ella Karuna Williams as Patty Newby and Alex Young as Virginia Creel.

SuperYou musical to play Leicester Curve.

The Curve theatre in Leicester has announced a new season of shows, including new musical SuperYou. Lourds Lane’s much talked-about show will be presented in Leicester from 22 October to 9 November 2024. The show has a book, music and lyrics by Lourds Lane.

SuperYou had been set to open off-Broadway in 2020 but Covid struck.

Instead, the show had its world premiere in Milwaukee at the Skylight Music Theatre in 2023, and a sold-out concert performance took place at the Lyric Theatre in London in November 2023, starring Lucie Jones (Wicked/Waitress/Les Miserables/X-Factor) as Katie, the show’s writer, composer Lourds Lane as Rise, Luke Brady (The Prince of Egypt) as Jay, Jenny O’Leary (Heathers) as Ima-Mazing, Sharon Ballard (Mother Goose) as Blast, Joni Ayton-Kent (Carousel) as Seven, Aaliyah Monk (School of Rock West End) as Young Katie, Jonty Peach (Romeo) as Matty, Maddy Brennan (My Fair Lady, Cabaret, Oklahoma!) as Mom, and Will Bozier (Wicked, Moulin Rouge!) as Mi-Roar.

SuperYou is about the transformative journey of a comic book artist who discovers self-love and her own voice as her superheroine creations spring to life. The musical’s score incorporates a wide range of musical styles, including rock, pop, hip hop, swing, blues, gospel, country, and soulful power ballads.

It’s unclear if the Curve is the first date of a tour for SuperYou or a stand-alone production. The show’s UK website still references a West End run in 2024.

Casting and creatives for SuperYou are yet to be announced.

Other shows announced for the Curve’s season include four Made at Curve original production: a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (13 – 15 June 2024), adapted and directed by Cara Nolan; new community production Fantastic Foxes (26 July – 3 August 2024), inspired by the story of Leicester City Football Club, written by Rob Ward; a new production of Katori Hall’s multi-award winning play The Mountaintop (21 September – 5 October 2024), directed by Nathan Powell; and Christmas show Pirates Love Underpants (2 December 2024 – 5 January 2025), a brand new musical based on Claire Freedman and Ben Cort’s picture book adapted by Brad Fitt, also directed by Cara Nolan.

Chancellor makes Theatre Tax Relief permanent in Budget.

Jeremy Hunt has announced a permanent rate for Theatre Tax Relief, after industry bosses warned a reduction to the scheme would prove a huge blow to the sector.
The chancellor has announced a rate of 45% for touring productions and 40% for non-touring shows, in what was likely the final Budget before the general election.

Hunt’s commitment does not match the exact level of what TTR had grown to – 50% for touring and 45% for non-touring productions – but will be considered a boost for the sector. The rate had been planned to taper from April 2025 (to 35% and 30% respectively) with a return to the pre-pandemic rate (25%/20%) in 2026.

Fears the rate would return to pre-pandemic levels of between 20-25% had prompted a 20% reduction in the productions planned for the next financial year, and a 17% drop in the number of playing weeks, Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre had found.

Surveyed SOLT and UK Theatre members had said the elevated rate, which was introduced in 2021 as a lockdown-era measure, had in the last financial year saved them a total value of £85,686,881 in relief claimed.

Hunt said: “In recognition of the creative and cultural sectors, Theatre Tax Relief has been made permanent. This is a wonderful lifeline for theatres, orchestras and performing arts organisations across the country.”

Producer Kenny Wax had previously warned that a “loss of the higher rate of tax would be a massive blow”.

Hunt also pledged £26 million to the National Theatre for a “major upgrade” to its stages, as he called his plans to continue higher rates for TTR “a lifeline for performing arts across the country”.

Meanwhile, Theatr Clwyd in north Wales said it was “grateful” to receive £1.6 million towards its major building redevelopment, which is currently earmarked to cost a total of more than £45 million. It vowed to put the funding to good use, by creating a “green, sustainable, world-class home for our communities, theatre-makers and future generations”.

Hunt called his plans a “Budget for long-term growth”, despite the country facing “the most challenging economic headwinds in modern history”.

In his speech, Hunt said the UK had become Europe’s largest film and TV production area, with studio space doubling in the last three years. He pledged to provide 40% relief on growth business rates to studios in the UK.

He committed £15 million to new funding for cultural projects through the West Midlands Combined Authority.

In a statement published the day prior to the budget, chief executive of advocacy group Creative UK Caroline Norbury said that in 2022 the gross value added of the creative industries had grown by more than 15% to £125 billion. “The Chancellor himself calls us a growth engine. Despite all this, we are undercapitalised. And that needs to change,” she added.

But lobbying conducted by the sector has been successful, with SOLT and UK Theatre saying they were “delighted with the chancellor’s announcement of a new permanent rate of Theatre Tax Relief. This is fantastic news for the theatre sector”.

Other changes announced in the Budget included a predicted 2p cut to National Insurance – a standout move estimated to cost approximately £10 billion – and yet another extended freeze on fuel duty.

However, despite campaigning backed by arts figures like Andrew Lloyd Webber and venues such as Shakespeare’s Globe, the chancellor did not reinstate tax-free shopping for tourists – something he had suggested he may “look again” at in his Autumn Statement.
The decision to leave tourist tax unchanged leaves Britain the only country in Europe to tax tourists for shopping; a situation which some argue lessens tourist spending in other areas, such as hospitality, transport, live entertainment, and the arts.
