UK Dancing News.

The UK dance scene in March 2026 is buzzing with national initiatives and major performances. From a nationwide movement to get everyone moving to high-profile ballet premieres, here is the latest news:

Major National Events:

• National Day of Dance (8 March 2026): Spearheaded by Angela Rippon CBE, the Let’s Dance! campaign reaches its peak on 8 March. The initiative aims to get the nation dancing for mental and physical health.
• English National Ballet Collaboration: The ENB has partnered with Dame Arlene Phillips to create choreography for the National Day of Dance, including seated and standing adaptations for their Dance for Parkinson’s programme.
• MOVE IT 2026: One of the world’s biggest dance festivals is expected this March, featuring headliners like Brian Friedman
  and offering workshops across all styles.

Performance Highlights:

• Royal Ballet & Opera: Key performances at the Royal Opera House include Giselle and Mayerling.
• Sadler’s Wells Spring Programme: – Mary, Queen of Scots: A major production running in London. – Body & Soul: Performed by the English National Ballet. – Turn it Out: Featuring Tiler Peck & Friends.
• Dance for Ukraine 21/03. (21 March 2026): A fundraiser gala at the Royal Academy of Dance, welcomed by Dame Darcey Bussell and featuring stars from the Royal Ballet.

• Eliot Smith Dance: The POPPY Spring tour visits Tunbridge Wells on 7 March.
• Shobana Jeyasingh Dance: Touring We Caliban throughout March.

Dance Experiences & Workshops:

• Dancing with the Stars Weekends: Donaheys is hosting immersive experiences featuring pro dancers Michelle Tsiakkas
  and Simone Arena at Alton Towers (6–8 March) and De Vere Beaumont Estate (27–29 March).
• Pineapple Dance Studios: Offering over 20 workshop pop-ups this month, including exclusive The Next Step choreography sessions with Alexandra Chaves on 1 March.
• Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour: The 2026 arena tour is underway, featuring stars like Lewis Cope.

The full cast for the upcoming London premiere staged concert of Joey Contreras’ musical
In Pieces at The Other Palace has been revealed.
Described as a love story about the people you don’t end up with, In Pieces follows the romantic journeys of six characters across three chapters of their lives. The staged concert is scheduled to run on 30 & 31 March 2026.

The production, directed by Martha Geelan, features the following cast:

I’m Every Woman – The Chaka Khan Musical moves premiere plans due to Peacock Theatre repairs.

I’m Every Woman – The Chaka Khan Musical has relocated its world premiere to the Hackney Empire after “essential building works” forced the immediate closure of the Peacock Theatre

Here are the updated plans and schedule:

• New Premiere Venue: The production will now open at the Hackney Empire for a limited engagement.
• Revised London Dates: Performances at the new venue will run from 20–25 March 2026.
• Booking Information: General booking for the Hackney run opens on 5 March 2026, with priority access for those who previously held tickets for the Peacock Theatre run.
• Refunds/Rebooking: Sadler’s Wells is contacting affected ticket holders from the cancelled Peacock run (originally scheduled for 5–28 March) regarding refunds and rebooking options.
• Touring Schedule: The musical will proceed with its regional tour as planned, visiting the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry (1–4 April) and the Congress Theatre, Eastbourne (7–11 April).
• Future Peacock Run: The production is currently expected to return to the Peacock Theatre in August 2026 once repairs are complete..

General News & Sighting

• Ashley Wallen won the Emmy award for Outstanding Choreography last night for his work on Disney’s “Descendants: The Rise of Red”.
• The Peacock theatre in London will close temporarily for essential building works, with all performances suspended during the period of repairs. The venue’s scheduled run of “I’m Every Woman – The Chaka Khan Musical” will no longer take place at the theatre. The production has now been relocated to the Hackney Empire where it will have a limited engagement from the 20th to the 25th of March.
• Joanne Clifton and Ore Oduba announced the “Champions Reunited ” tour to mark 10 years since the pair won Strictly. The tour will open in Bournemouth on the 17th of August.
• Dianne Buswell and Joe Sugg have welcomed their baby boy.
• Choreographer Wayne McGregor received an Olivier Award for his contribution to dance. Miss Betty Laine OBE was given an Industry Recognition Award.

• Chichester Festival theatre has announced a new production of “My Fair Lady”. It will run at the Festival theatre from the 6th of July until the 5th of September. The choreography is by Stephen Mear.
• Ryan Tomash has been promoted to principle dancer at the New York City Ballet.

• The English National Ballet has announced its season for 2026/7 titled “A Season To Feel More”.
• “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” will return to the UK on a 10th anniversary tour. The show will open in Leeds on the 15th of January 2027. It has choreography by Kate Prince.
• A musical stage adaptation of the film “Coyote Ugly” will come to the West End in 2027. It will be directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell.
• “Just For One Day; The Live Aid Musical” is to embark on a UK tour in 2027. The show has choreography by Ebony Molina.
• “Heathers the Musical” will return to the UK from Summer 2026 for a new tour. The show will have choreography by Gary Lloyd.
• A new production of “Fame” will run from the 28th of July until the 15th of August 2026 at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. It will have choreography by Tom Jackson Greaves.
• “Dirty Dancing” will be touring the UK from the summer of 2026. The show will have choreography by Austin Wilkes and open in Milton Keynes on the 27th of August 2026.
• A new revival of “Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” has been confirmed for this year as part of the new season from the Birmingham Rep.
• A musical version of “10 Things I Hate About You” is officially in the works. It will have choreography by Christopher Wheeldon

Dance Consortium Brings Michael Keegan-Dolan’s Acclaimed ‘MÁM’ on Debut UK Tour.

   

Dance Consortium is making history with its latest tour, marking two significant firsts: the organisation’s inaugural presentation of an Irish company and the long-awaited UK debut of Michael Keegan-Dolan’s Olivier Award-nominated masterpiece MÁM, performed by Teaċ Daṁsa.

This nine-venue tour runs from 3 February to 4 March 2026, opening at The Lowry in Salford Quays and visiting major theatres across the UK, including Birmingham Hippodrome, Brighton Dome, and Mayflower Theatre Southampton.

MÁM, which premiered to sell-out crowds at Sadler’s Wells in 2020, represents a deeply personal milestone for Keegan-Dolan. It is the first work fully conceived and created after he relocated his company Teaċ Daṁsa to West Kerry in 2019, drawing profound inspiration from the region’s native language, rugged landscape, musical traditions, and community.

Legally Blonde musical tour sets full cast joining Amber Davies.

The much-loved musical, which follows a misjudged young woman who overcomes social expectations and becomes a successful Harvard Law School graduate, is heading out on a new tour this year.

With music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and a book by Heather Hach, the musical is based on the novel by Amanda Brown and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture of the same name.

It was first seen on Broadway in 2007, with a West End production opening in 2010, where it won three Olivier Awards.

Curve artistic director Nikolai Foster will direct the new production, produced by Curve and ROYO, who also collaborated on the tour of Kinky Boots set to arrive in the West End. Legally Blonde will open at the Leicester venue in 2026 and tour across the UK into 2027.

As already revealed, Amber Davies will lead the company as Elle. Joining her will be Hannah Lowther as Margot and the alternate Elle Woods. Lowther and Davies will star alongside George Crawford as Emmett, Karen Mavundukure as Paulette, Adam Cooper as Callahan, Jamie Chatterton as Warner, Annabelle Terry as Vivienne, Jocasta Almgill as Brooke, Rosanna Harris as Serena and Remi Ferdinand as Pilar. Ty-Reece Stewart will play Kyle and Bradley Delarosbel will play Carlos.

The cast is completed by Keanna Bloomfield, James Lim, Aaron Shales, Jaime Tait, Daisy Twells, Louie Wood, Raiaz Fisher, Dylan Gordon-Jones, Lauren Hampton and Ollie Hart-Bradford.

Joining Foster on the creative team are choreographer Leah Hill, musical supervisor and additional arrangements Matt Spencer-Smith, set designer Colin Richmond, costume designer Tom Rogers, wigs, hair and make-up designer Sam Cox, lighting designer Ben Cracknell and sound designer Adam Fisher.

Wicked to be added to Amazon Prime Video.

Part one of the Jon M Chu-directed screen adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande set box office records over its opening weekend.

Based on the hit novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, Wicked tells the story of two unlikely university friends in the land of Oz, one destined to become Glinda the Good and the other, the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked writers Winnie Holzman (book) and Stephen Schwartz (score) collaborated on the screenplay with Dana Fox.

Erivo and Grande were both nominated for Academy Awards for their performances as Elphaba and Glinda, while the film was nominated for Best Picture. It picked up two Academy Awards at the 2025 ceremony in the following categories: Best Costume Design (for Paul Tazewell) and Production Design (for Nathan Crowley).

The film will be added to the streaming service worldwide on 25 July 2025.

Looking ahead, Wicked: For Good will be released on 21 November 2025.

Welsh dance sector in ‘urgent’ need of investment.

   

Dance in Wales is in urgent need of “reimagining, rebuilding and reinvestment”, according to a review of the sector.

The results of the long-awaited analysis of the country’s dance provisions have now been published by the Arts Council of Wales, which has also revealed a plan of action to tackle funding inequities and infrastructure gaps.

As well as an additional £350,000 for dance development, the funding body has promised innovations, including a group of dance experts to advise artistic directors about programming at significant venues.

Drawing on conversations with dance artists, companies, educators and audiences, the Wales Dance Review highlights areas of the country that are “critically” behind in terms of access to the art form, as well as particular difficulties for the community dance sector.

Funding is concentrated in South East Wales, according to the report, which warns that opportunities are limited in other regions as a result.

Rural areas such as Pembrokeshire and Powys are facing particularly acute challenges”, it adds.

The review further claims that scarcity and uneven distribution of resources have led to a competitive atmosphere and a “protectionist” working environment.

New Dorian Gray musical in development – with first track released.

Funding for 10 dance centres across England has been confirmed for another year, following campaigning by the likes of Alistair Spalding and Matthew Bourne.

The National Centres for Advanced Training in Dance, present in cities including Birmingham, Newcastle, and Nottingham, will receive core funding to cover student bursaries for another 12 months.

The funding had been championed ahead of the government’s spending review by top choreographers and dance sector leaders.

Figures including Arlene Phillips and Anthony Van Laast had previously called upon the Department for Education to safeguard funding, after a £300,000 grant for outreach work was cut in December 2024.

There were fears the 10 National Dance CATs were at risk following the cut. While the outreach funding has not be reinstated, the core funding means student bursaries can be offered for 2025/26.

The National Dance CATS, as the scheme is also known, celebrated its 20th anniversary last year.

It trains approximately 900 students each year, with 68% of those training in the 2023/24 academic year receiving bursaries.

But despite relief that funding for student bursaries would continue for 2025/26, concerns persist about the future of the dance centres, without a guarantee of its long-term future.

The pre-vocational training is available for dancers aged 10-18 and is offered alongside mainstream education.

Spalding, artistic director and chief executive of Sadler’s Wells, previously said: “The small investment required to fund this programme annually has a substantial impact in terms of the opportunities it provides to young people and the economic return.

“The future artistic director of Sadler’s Wells is very likely among the current cohort.”

Strictly co-host Tess Daly made MBE for services to broadcasting.

TV presenter Tess Daly shed tears when she opened the letter telling her she was to be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to broadcasting.

The 56-year-old has been recognised, with her Strictly Come Dancing co-host Claudia Winkleman also becoming an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours.

She told the Media: “This genuinely came as the greatest surprise of my life. I don’t think I’ve come back down to earth yet, I didn’t see it coming, and it almost didn’t happen, because the letter went to the wrong address.

“And thank goodness, someone very kind found me. And so by the time I got it, I only had, I think it was two or three days left to accept it. There’s a deadline of acceptance. I can’t imagine not ever wanting to accept such a wonderful award. But of course I did.

“But yes, it was cutting it fine, because it went to the wrong address first of all, but it ended well.”

BBC Strictly Come Dancing ‘signs up’ Gladiators star.

   

Gladiators’ Nitro, also known as Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, is set to join the 2025 series of Strictly Come Dancing. The 36-year-old has previously graced the BBC show’s dance floor.

In the 2024 Christmas special, he partnered with professional dancer Nancy Xu, 33, and their performance earned them one of the highest scores of the night—an impressive 37 points for their Street/Commercial routine.

The former Olympic sprinter caught the attention of the show’s bosses, who are keen to have him on board for a full season of the popular dance competition, now in its 23rd year. It’s hoped that he can juggle his commitments with Gladiators, which typically films over the summer months.

Strictly usually kicks off in August, but contestants are confirmed weeks prior and start training immediately to build their confidence before the live shows commence.

Dance centres backed by Matthew Bourne have funding confirmed for another year.

Funding for 10 dance centres across England has been confirmed for another year, following campaigning by the likes of Alistair Spalding and Matthew Bourne.

The National Centres for Advanced Training in Dance, present in cities including Birmingham, Newcastle, and Nottingham, will receive core funding to cover student bursaries for another 12 months.

The funding had been championed ahead of the government’s spending review by top choreographers and dance sector leaders.

Figures including Arlene Phillips and Anthony Van Laast had previously called upon the Department for Education to safeguard funding, after a £300,000 grant for outreach work was cut in December 2024.

There were fears the 10 National Dance CATs were at risk following the cut. While the outreach funding has not be reinstated, the core funding means student bursaries can be offered for 2025/26.

The National Dance CATS, as the scheme is also known, celebrated its 20th anniversary last year.

It trains approximately 900 students each year, with 68% of those training in the 2023/24 academic year receiving bursaries.

But despite relief that funding for student bursaries would continue for 2025/26, concerns persist about the future of the dance centres, without a guarantee of its long-term future.

The pre-vocational training is available for dancers aged 10-18 and is offered alongside mainstream education.

• Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has announced a “Dance Takeover” for the 20th of July. The day will include pro workshops with the Rambert, Ballet Black, McOnie Company, Deaf Men Dancing, London City Ballet, Arthur Pita and Boy Blue.
• The Greenwich & Docklands International Festival will return this summer from the 22nd of August until the 6th of September, marking its 30th anniversary with a programme of free outdoor theatre, circus and dance.
• West End Live will take place this year on the 21st and 22nd of June at Trafalgar Square in London.
• Regent’s Park Open Air theatre will present “Brigadoon” from the 2nd of August until the 20th of September. The show is directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie and stars Danielle Fiamanya and Chrissy Brooke.

• Casting has been announced for the upcoming musical “Footballers’ Wives”. It will star Ceili O’ Connor and Tom Bowen. The show has choreography by Arlene Phillips and Richard Roe and will play at the Edinburgh Fringe from the 30th of July until the 24th of August.
• “Britain’s Got Talent” winner Sydnie Christmas is set to appear in the London transfer of “101 Dalmations The Musical”. The show has choreography by Lucy Hind and will open at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith on the 18th of July.
• “Burlesque” has revealed the full cast for its West End transfer. It has choreography by Todrick Hall and Jenni Thomasson, with Aaron Renfree as resident choreographer. India Thornton is the dance captain. The show will open at the Savoy Theatre on the 10th of July.

Graziano Di Prima asks ‘are you ready’ as he makes major announcement in UK return.

Graziano Di Prima has revealed he’ll be returning to the UK where he’ll be teaching people to dance across the country. Sharing the news on Instagram, he said: “UK, are you ready to dance with me?
“This May 2025, I’ll be touring across the UK with my @dancingwithgraz Dance Classes Tour , bringing the energy, rhythm, and passion of dance to cities all around the country!”
The dancer added: “Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced dancer, these workshops are for everyone who wants to move, learn, and have fun together.

Back in November, four months on from his last social media post in July that addressed his Strictly exit, Graziano has returned to social media with a dramatic video in which he could be seen walking across a bridge at night while clips of his early dancing career as a youngster flashed across the screen.

He was then seen dancing under the night sky with his wife Giada Lini, a professional dancer on Ballando con le Stelle, the Italian version of Dancing with the Stars.

Alongside the post, Graziano wrote: “Dance has always been the centre of my life, my greatest passion, the path I chose and dedicated years of study, sacrifice, and love to. After a period of reflection, I feel stronger than ever and eager to return to what I love most: dancing.

“The future is a whole world of new open windows, ready to welcome new dreams and new challenges, and I’m excited to continue this journey with even more determination and inspiration.

Fiona Shaw to narrate Sadler’s Wells dance documentary.

     

A documentary is to go behind the scenes of Sadler’s Wells’ inaugural Rose International Dance Prize.

Narrated by Fiona Shaw, the film is to follow four of the shortlisted choreographers from rehearsal to performance as they vie for glory at the first Rose Prize ceremony, which has been billed as the Olivier Awards of dance.

Christos Papadopoulos, who won the competition in February, alongside fellow nominees Kyle Abraham, Marco da Silva Ferreira and Lia Rodrigues, will delve into their “ambitions” and discuss the importance of the new prize for the intentional dance ecosystem. Between them, the choreographers hail from the US, Greece, Brazil and Portugal.

The camera will also follow the judging panel, which includes Arlene Phillips and musician PJ Harvey, as they watch the performances and deliberate ahead of the ceremony, which was held in February.

We are back after our Summer break! Our Pro Dancer News reflects on the major dance events of the last month.

Aljaž Škorjanec returns to the Strictly Come Dancing Ballroom as a Professional Dancer.

 

Aljaž Škorjanec will return to the Strictly Come Dancing Ballroom as a Professional Dancer for the brand-new series. After a two year hiatus, fan favourite Aljaž is waltzing back onto our screens for the 20th year of the nation’s favourite dance show. The news was revealed this evening (Monday 8 July) on The One Show.

The multi-award-winning entertainment show, produced by BBC Studios, will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer for its new series this Autumn. As Strictly celebrates two spectacular decades of dance, this series promising to be extra special with even more glitz, glamour and unforgettable performances.

Aljaž Škorjanec is a World-Class Professional Dancer and a 19 time Slovenian champion in Ballroom, Latin and Ten dance, who graced the nation with his fancy footwork on Strictly for nine iconic series. Aljaž and his celebrity partner Abbey Clancy raised the Glitterball in his debut year on the show in 2013 and was a runner up in 2017 with partner, Gemma Atkinson.

Aljaž says: “I could not be more ecstatic to be back with the Strictly family! This year is such a special one for this legendary show, I can’t wait to be a part of it and make my return to the dancefloor. I had an absolute ball during my nine year stint on Strictly, during my time away I became a parent, which has been an exciting challenge in itself and now I’m ready to experience the Strictly magic again. It feels so right to be coming back, I missed the fun, glitter and the judges of course and I hope to make my daughter Lyra proud!”

Sarah James, Executive Producer of Strictly Come Dancing says: “We are all so thrilled that Aljaž is back in the Strictly Ballroom, bringing his incredible choreography and passion for dance. During his nine series he was a firm favourite with viewers across the country, I’m sure everyone is in for a treat as he joins us to entertain the nation for a very special 20th year of the show.”

Multiple reports suggest the Strictly pro was “sacked” after claims were made of gross misconduct towards his partner on last year’s series, Zara McDermott.

The Italian dancer had his contract terminated this week after a meeting with Strictly bosses.
A source close to the dancer said that he was “petrified and in a bad place”.

“He is being supported by his wife Giada and they are planning to pack up and move back to Italy,” they told the Media.

The 30-year-old earlier reacted to the claims with a statement on Instagram.
He said: “I deeply regret the events that led to my departure from Strictly.
“My intense passion and determination to win might have affected my training regime. Respecting the HR process, I understand it’s best for the show if I step away.
“While there are aspects of this story involving external influences that I can’t discuss at this time, I remain committed to being strong for my family and friends.
“I wish the Strictly family nothing but success in the future. I also want to thank everyone who has supported my career, both professional and personally. When the time is right, I will share my story.”

The 30-year-old was due to appear on the upcoming series until being contacted by the programme’s executives, who wanted to question him about his behaviour, with one show source saying: “Graziano had to go. It has been awful.”

Di Prima joined the show in 2018 and reached week six with Zara last year after reaching the quarter-final with actor Kym Marsh in 2022.

A BBC spokesperson confirmed that Di Prima was “no longer a part of the line-up of professional dancers for the upcoming series”.

The Greatest Showman circus show announces London venue, dates and details.

Details and dates have been revealed for the new musical circus show coming to London, inspired by The Greatest Showman.

The circus event is based on the 2017 film which starred Hugh Jackman, Zendaya, Michelle Williams and Zac Efron, with numbers including “This Is Me” and “From Now On”. It has a completely original story by Jenny Bicks, with songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

The film followed the famous P T Barnum, a pioneering circus owner who made it big in the US.

From the mind of creative director Simon Hammerstein, Come Alive! The Greatest Showman will be opening at the Empress Museum in London’s Earls Court (near West Brompton station), beginning performances on 23 September 2024. The age rating for the show is ten plus.

It will be presented inside a dedicated 700-seat big top space, featuring circus performers and musical theatre stars from the West End and beyond. A pre-sale will begin on 17 July, with general sale from 18 July.

Hammerstein is joined on the creative team by music producer and Olivier Award-nominated Matthew Brind (Paddington 2, Just For One Day), lead choreographer Jerry Reeve (The Voice UK, the Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Party at the Palace) and Emmy Award-nominated lighting designer Adam Bassett for Woodroffe Basset Design (London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, Adele – Live).

Murmurings of a direct stage adaptation of the film have been rumbling along for years, especially after the blockbuster’s major box office haul.

Six the Musical cast recordings reach a milestone achievement.

The producers of the WhatsOnStage Award-winning hit musical Six, written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, have announced that the show’s UK and Broadway cast recordings have now been collectively streamed over a billion times.

The UK studio cast recording was released in 2018 and features the vocals of Renée Lamb (as Catherine of Aragon), Christina Modestou (as Anne Boleyn), Natalie Paris (as Jane Seymour), Genesis Lynea (as Anna of Cleves), Aimie Atkinson (as Catherine Howard), and Izuka Hoyle (as Catherine Parr).

It has orchestrations by Tom Curran and is produced by Sam Featherstone, Marlow, Moss and Joe Beighton, with executive producers George Stiles and Paul Lisberg.

The Grammy-nominated Six: Live on Opening Night marked the first time an original Broadway cast recording to ever be recorded live on an opening night. It debuted at number one on the Billboard cast album charts and is produced by Paul Gatehouse, alongside Marlow, Moss, Featherstone, and Curran.

The album features the original Broadway Queens (Adrianna Hicks, Andrea Macasaet, Abby Mueller, Brittney Mack, Samantha Pauly, and Anna Uzele), as well as a bonus track by the original Broadway alternates (Keirsten Nicole Hodgens, Nicole Kyoung-Mi Lambert, Courtney Mack, and Mallory Maedke).

Six the Musical reimagines the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives as pop stars, blending historical heartbreak with modern empowerment in an 80-minute theatrical experience.

On the global stage, Six is celebrating its third year on Broadway at the Lena Horne Theatre, alongside a North American tour and a second Australian tour opening in Melbourne. The musical has also seen performances in South Korea, Las Vegas, Amsterdam, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland and is also scheduled to visit Singapore, the Philippines, and Japan. In the UK, the West End production continues its successful run at the Vaudeville Theatre.

Six has won over 35 major international awards, including the 2022 Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design. It also secured consecutive WhatsOnStage Awards for Best West End Show in 2022 and 2023, and the 2020 BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical.

It is co-directed by Moss and Jamie Armitage, and features choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille. The design team includes set designer Emma Bailey, costume designer Gabriella Slade, lighting designer Tim Deiling, and sound designer Paul Gatehouse.

The score features orchestrations by Curran, with music supervision and vocal arrangements by Beighton. Musical director Yutong Zhang and associate UK musical supervisor Lauren Hopkinson round out the team. Casting is by Pearson Casting.

Six is produced by Kenny Wax, Wendy and Andy Barnes, and Stiles.

Back to the Future announces new cast and West End extension.

A new cohort of cast members are joining Back to the Future: The Musical.

The critically acclaimed show, which has won multiple awards for Best New Musical, is entering its fourth year. It first opened in London on 13 September 2021, began performances on Broadway on 30 June 2023, while a North American tour launched in Cleveland, Ohio, in June 2024 and will run in cities across the US and Canada until August 2025. The musical also has plans for international productions, starting with Japan in 2025.

The new cast features recent graduate Vasco Emauz as Marty McFly, making his West End debut, Orlando Gibbs as George McFly, CJ Borger as Goldie Wilson and Marvin Berry, Alex Runicles as Biff Tannen, Talia Palamathanan as Jennifer Parker, Ellis Kirk as alternate Marty McFly, and Liam McHugh as Dave McFly. Ensemble members include Kofi Aidoo-Appiah, Billie Bowman, and Gracie Caine.

Continuing cast members include Cory English as Doctor Emmett Brown, Sarah Goggin as Lorraine Baines, Lee Ormsby as Strickland and alternate Doctor Emmett Brown, and Patricia Wilkins as Linda McFly. Ensemble members Ella Beaumont, Sia Dauda, Alexander Day, Helen Gulston, Matthew Ives, Connor Lewis, Adam Margilewski, Bryan Mottram, Anna Murray, Samuel Nicholas, Louis Quinn, Zachkiel Smith, Grace Swaby-Moore, and Alexandra Wright will also return.

The show has also extended its run at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End through to Sunday 27 July 2025. Tickets are now on sale.

The original cast recording, released by Sony Music’s Masterworks Broadway label, is now available and has surpassed 20 million streams.

It features new music by multi-Grammy Award winners Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, alongside classic songs from the movie, including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode.”

The show features a book by Bob Gale and is directed by Tony Award-winning director John Rando (Urinetown, On The Town), alongside the multi-Tony and Olivier Award-winning design team of Tim Hatley (set and costume design), Tim Lutkin (lighting), Hugh Vanstone (lighting consultant), Gareth Owen (sound) and Finn Ross (video), with choreography by Chris Bailey, musical supervision and arrangements by Nick Finlow and Illusions by Chris Fisher. Red Bull to host world’s biggest street dance battle in Manchester 0n July 27th.

Winner from the UK Final in Manchester will head to the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final in Mumbai, India in November
The final for the world’s biggest street dance is taking place in Manchester next month. Freight Island will be the stage for the dance competition ran by energy drink giant and events company Red Bull on Saturday, July 27.

An international mixed-style competition, ‘Red Bull Dance Your Style’ has been running since 2019 and celebrates a variety of talent across the UK. The unique competition looks to unify dancers and spectators alike, through 16 rounds of freestyle dance which showcase any style from Hip Hop to House, Afro Dance, Locking, Voguing, Krumping and more.

Road to the UK Final, Red Bull Dance Your Style has visited cities across the UK for a nationwide open audition, including Swindon, Edinburgh, and Manchester. All successful qualifiers from these auditions will attend the final UK showdown on July 27 at Freight Island in Manchester. The UK Final is set to be an ‘electric crescendo’ that sees finalists battle it out for their chance to compete at the world final in Mumbai, India, in November.

The all-gender competition consists of 16 rounds where dancers battle one-on-one at each round, and the audience are in charge to crown the next UK winner through live voting.

Wicked movie moves up release date to avoid Moana 2 clash.

The cinema release date for the first half of the Wicked film series has been moved up by five days, now coming by bubble into cinemas on November 22 instead of November 27.

November 27 was also the set release date for Disney’s Moana 2; the two films will no longer go head to head in their frist weekend. Now, Wicked will go up against Gladiator II.

The Wicked films star Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Tony nominee Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, and Peter Dinklage as Dr Dillamond. Jon M Chu directs the two-part property. Part Two is still slated for November 26, 2025.

It is based on the hit novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, Wicked tells the story of two unlikely university friends in the land of Oz, one destined to become Glinda The Good and the other, the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked writers Winnie Holzman (book) and Stephen Schwartz (score) are collaborating on the screenplay.

Blackpool’s dance heritage celebrated at festival.

The woman behind a month-long festival of dance in Blackpool has hailed the resort’s “unrivalled heritage” for the art.

The Capital of Dance pilot event features dozens of live shows, classes and street dancing with everything from drag queen workshops to ballet taster classes.

BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing stars Karen Hauer and Gorka Marquez will also be hosting workshops.

Marina Blore, the artistic director of the festival, said she intends build on its success and return in 2025 with the dance and movement version of the Edinburgh Fringe.

Ms Blore said the resort boasts two iconic ballrooms – the Empress ballroom at the Winter Gardens and Blackpool Tower’s ballroom, which between them have staged some of the world’s biggest dance events with the latter hosting Strictly Come Dancing shows.

She said Blackpool’s dance history “goes back to the Victorian dance trains that used to bring hundreds of people to dance on Central Pier through to the big band era”, adding there was also “the heyday of variety, disco, Northern soul, super clubs and now, of course, Strictly”.

“Where else could you possibly launch a festival like this?”

The festival runs until 14 July.

Posthumous LGBT Award for Strictly Dancer.

Former Strictly Come Dancing star Robin Windsor has been honoured at the British LGBT Awards with a special posthumous award.
Actor Lisa Riley, his dance partner for the 2012 series, accepted the award alongside the late dancer’s family.
Windsor, who appeared on the BBC One show between 2010 and 2013, died in February aged 44.

His aunt Alison gave a speech thanking his fans for their “endless messages and tributes.”
She said: “[The tributes] have been a great comfort to myself and all the family on days when we needed it most.”
“He was out and living his best life, a proud gay man who wanted to be seen at his real self.
“When we look at this beautiful award, we’ll smile back and feel him closer.”

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Riley told the BBC the honour was “incredibly important” and that she hoped to use the event to raise more awareness of mental health.
Windsor was an advocate for mental health and worked closely with the charity Sane.

Riley said: “Mental health in the gay community is really bad, and if I can help in any way… then I’ve done my bit.
“I wish he was here, he should be on my arm covered in sparkles and having a ball, but the energy he had is imprinted on my heart.
“He would be shining down and laughing at us. His vibrancy, energy and zest for life was out there for everyone to see.
“He wasn’t a hidden gay man, he was a proud, proud gay man.”

Windor’s sister Hayley also attended the event.
She said: “Events like these are hugely significant to the community and he’d have been over the moon.”

The British LGBT Awards, now in its 10th year, was created to celebrate and promote the work of the LGBT community.
The host of this year’s gala, Julian Clary, said the awards were a “loud, proud and inspiring” way of celebrating LGBT people’s contributions to society.

Giovanni Pernice in huge career move as Strictly scandal could see him ‘leave UK’.

Giovanni Pernice could be getting set for a fresh start in his native Italy according to reports. The former Strictly Come Dancing pro, who has been axed from next year’s lineup, is reportedly in talks to appear on Dancing With the Stars Italy, which is called Ballando con le Stelle.

“Giovanni is in advanced talks to join the Italian version of Strictly, Dancing with the Stars. Bosses are really keen to sign him as a judge given his fame and status in the UK but are also open to the dancer performing as a professional, if he still wants to compete.

“It’s a great move for Giovanni, who has weighed up the possibility of doing shows like I’m A Celeb, but dance will always be his passion. All he wants is a fresh start and to join Dancing with the Stars in Italy will certainly give him the new chapter he’s been hoping for,” a source told Media.

His live show commitments end on July 21, which frees him up to film Dancing With the Stars when it begins shooting in August should he sign up for it.

The 33-year-old professional dancer has been embroiled in controversy for months after his most recent appearance on the BBC dance show due to allegations about his behaviour, which he has denied.

He was partnered with actress Amanda Abbington, who left the show prematurely and later claimed she suffered from PTSD.

The BBC reportedly initiated an internal investigation after receiving complaints from several other stars who had worked with him on the show.

Breakdancing is set to steal the show in its Olympic Games debut at Paris 2024.

 

The world’s best B-Boys and B-Girls are descending on Paris this summer as breaking makes its debut at the Olympic Games.

With its roots in 1970s New York City hip-hop culture, breaking (you might know it as ‘break dancing’) is like nothing ever seen before at the Olympics.

The fast-paced and dynamic sport is rapidly rising in popularity across the world and now has the chance to demonstrate exactly why.

Why is breaking at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games?

Breaking is the latest youth-focused sport to be added to the Olympic programme as organisers aim to make the Games more inclusive and accessible than ever before.

Other sports that have been added in an attempt to draw a younger audience to the Olympics include skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing, 3×3 basketball and BMX freestyle, all of which will return to the Games after featuring for the first time at Tokyo 2020.

In addition, breaking was selected because it contributes to a gender-balanced Olympic Games, with an equal measure of B-Boys and B-Girls competing in the sport. This is now a key criteria for organisers when determining the Olympic programme.

A test run was held for breaking at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. The event was considered a great success and breaking was put forward as a sport for Paris 2024 shortly after.
What are the Olympic rules for breaking?

The breaking competition at Paris 2024 will feature two events — one for men and one for women. In total there will be 32 athletes — or ‘breakers’ — divided up into 16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls.

They will compete in one-on-one battles, taking it in turns to perform during 60-second ‘throw downs’. Most major breaking competitions have two or three throw downs in each battle, increasing to five in the final.

The breakers are rated by a panel of judges, who are usually respected members of the breaking community. The performances are evaluated using six criteria — creativity, personality, technique, variety, stage presence and musicality.

Technique, stage presence, and creativity collectively contribute 60 per cent to the final score, while the remaining 40 per cent is determined by the other three criteria.

The breaker with the highest score progresses to the next stage of the competition.
What are the main moves used by breakers?

The DJ is a crucial aspect of the sport, with breakers required to improvise to the beat of the music. They will combine three basic elements into their routine — toprock, freeze and downrock.

Toprock refers to all moves performed standing up, while freeze is when a breaker stops in the middle of their performance in an unusual position, such as on their hands or head.

Downrock is the most crucial element, as it refers to the moves performed on the floor. This includes power moves, which are considered the centrepiece of a routine. These acrobatic moves normally involve breakers spinning their whole body on their hands, elbows, back, head or shoulders, and require strength and flexibility.

Strictly Come Dancing star Craig Revel Horwood to release debut solo album.

Strictly Come Dancing star Craig Revel Horwood has announced a surprise new venture.

The TV personality, who has been a judge on the BBC competition since its debut episode in 2004, will release his debut solo album Revelations: Songs Boys Don’t Sing later this year.

On Monday (17 June), Horwood released the debut single from the record, a cover of Dame Shirley Bassey’s 1968 song “This Is My Life”.

The album features covers of tracks usually associated with female singers. Songs include “On My Own” from Les Misérables, “Don’t Rain On My Parade” from Funny Girl and “Little Girls” from Annie, which Horwood has performed as Miss Hannigan while touring the musical in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2023.

Revelations: Songs Boys Don’t Sing will be released on 18 October. This will coincide with the next series of Strictly, which is due to start the month before.

Choreographer Akram Khan launches podcast Move to Live.

Choreographer Akram Khan will front a new podcast set to explore “the transformative power of movement” in the arts.

The weekly podcast, Move to Live, will see Khan interview guests including actor Andy Serkis and Royal Ballet principal Francesca Hayward about how movement fuels their creativity and well-being.

Designer Es Devlin, actor Khalid Abdalla and theatremaker Kathryn Hunter will also feature on the podcast series, which is presented by Marquee TV and Tandem Productions.

Available from June 5, the first episode includes an interview with Khan himself, exploring his “concerns for future generations if dance and movement continue to be neglected in the school curriculum”.

Announcing Move to Live, Khan said: “As a dancer, choreographer and director, I’ve made movement my life’s work. I’m fascinated by how the way we move affects the way we live and how the way we live shapes our movement.

“I’ve loved having this opportunity to explore this on the podcast with some truly wonderful guests and hope it inspires others to think more about their relationship to movement and dance.”

The podcast marks the latest collaboration between Khan and Marquee TV, with the choreographer recently acting as a guest curator on the streaming site, on which his first full-length ballet Giselle for English National Ballet is currently one of the most popular dance titles.

The first episode of Move to Live will be available on all podcast platforms and Marquee TV from June 5, with other episodes released weekly on Wednesdays until July 24.

Protesters denounce cuts to live music by Northern Ballet.

Protesters clad in Shakespeare costumes have marched on Sadler’s Wells to denounce cuts to Northern Ballet’s live orchestra.

Approximately 25 musicians turned up at the London venue, ahead of the first performance of Northern Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet on May 28.

The Shakespearean tragedy is the first touring production impacted by the company’s move towards recorded music thanks to rising touring costs.

Although Sadler’s Wells audiences will enjoy live accompaniment, subsequent touring locations including Canterbury and Newcastle will not.

Campaigners against the changes include the Musicians’ Union. It organised the protest and says axing Northern Ballet Sinfonia is no solution to a national arts funding crisis. Instead, they are calling for urgent intervention from the likes of Arts Council England to save jobs and safeguard live music.

Demonstrator Mary Gilbert, an oboist, said it felt “necessary” to “take a stand” after working for Northern Ballet for 25 years.

She said: “Those of us protesting have a great sense of pride in what we do. Live music is ballet’s heart and soul – even Shakespeare wrote most of his plays around the performing of music. It is integral to telling the story, guiding the actors and captivating audiences.

“With my job in the lurch and income looking uncertain, it has made for a stressful time when combined with our current economic climate. We believe in bringing the full live ballet to regional audiences in the UK and will be continuing our campaigning efforts to do so.”

Naomi Pohl, general secretary of the MU, commented: “The protest is a statement that we will continue applying pressure until Northern Ballet and Arts Council England agree a realistic funding solution that protects jobs and keeps live music at the heart of Northern Ballet productions.

“Musicians’ livelihoods are on the line – with our data showing that musicians, on average, make £20,000 a year, you can imagine that any negative impact on this income is felt very heavily. It impacts their ability to provide for themselves, their families, and their capacity to invest in their art.”

She continued: “The fear is that this cut is a slippery slope and a recording being used in place of the company’s orchestra is a precedent our members will not tolerate. It isn’t a position we want to be in, we understand the company needs more financial support, and urgently. With a general election announced, this is a key moment for us to make our case and ensure the arts are prioritised in any new government’s recovery plan.”

More than 18,000 members of the public have now signed an MU and Northern Ballet Sinfonia petition calling for a “realistic funding solution” to protect “world-class musicians” at the company.

Northern Ballet has attributed changes to its set-up to “an incredibly challenging financial environment”, with the decision hitting not only Sinfonia players but up to 200 musicians in the reserves pool according to a BBC report last year.

Earlier this year, the company had said it was “actively fundraising and lobbying key stakeholders” to ensure that future audiences across the UK would be able to enjoy “large-scale ballet accompanied by live music”.

A Northern Ballet spokesperson said: “Last year Northern Ballet had to make the difficult decision to enter into negotiations with Northern Ballet Sinfonia and the Musicians’ Union to reassess the amount of live music that could accompany our national tours from April 2024. This decision was not taken lightly but in response to an incredibly challenging financial environment where inflation and rising costs have made our traditional touring model unsustainable. As a Company touring widely with a large number of dancers, musicians and other staff we have been particularly exposed to inflation in all areas of operation.

“Live music remains central to the artistic vision of Northern Ballet and we are working to ensure that our Sinfonia will perform with us on our national tours as much as is possible. However, in an environment where many arts organisations are facing hard choices to ensure sustainability, we will be performing to a mixed programme of live and recorded music in the coming year.

“Since our previous update, we have undertaken additional fundraising initiatives which, alongside other measures, will enable live music to be performed by our Sinfonia for the full tour of Romeo and Juliet in spring 2024 (Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Norwich, London).

“Autumn performances of Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and in Southampton, Canterbury and Newcastle in September 2024 will be performed to recorded music. The tour of A Christmas Carol will be performed to recorded music and the tour of Jane Eyre will be performed to live music from Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

“We are very conscious of the uncertainty and distress these ongoing negotiations are causing for Sinfonia members and the company at large and would like to thank the players as well as the MU for their cooperation during this difficult time. We remain committed to performing to and commissioning new live music for our work and continue to work in dialogue with our Sinfonia and the MU to achieve this.

“We are actively fundraising and lobbying key stakeholders on this issue to ensure that in future audiences in towns and cities across the UK will be able to experience large scale ballet accompanied by live music. The cultural sector in the UK is under extreme financial pressure from many directions and more than ever we would like to thank our audiences and supporters for continuing to stand alongside us, and crucially for continuing to buy tickets to experience our work.”

Strictly Come Dancing won’t hit screens until the autumn, yet talk has already turned to who could be competing this year.

The hit BBC dance competition is busy securing its lineup for its 22nd series and while the official list is still yet to be released, many celebrities are rumoured to be taking part. They will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Coronation Street’s Ellie Leach, who took home the 2023 Glitterball trophy with Vito Coppola.

The confirmed professional dancers are also waiting to be unveiled. Following the last series, there has been speculation over whether Giovanni Pernice will return after former contestants have spoke out against him. It comes after reports he is “too intense” to train and dance with, which emerged following his recent pairing with actress Amanda Abbington.

Dianne Buswell reunites with Bobby Brazier for ‘special’ dance’.

 

Dianne Buswell and Bobby Brazier have reunited for a ‘special’ dance months after competing together on Strictly Come Dancing. The pair, who were contestants on the latest series of the BBC dance contest, appeared back together in a day that pro dancer Dianne described as ‘pure joy’.

Dianne and Bobby made it to the Strictly final alongside actor Layton Williams, who was paired with professional Nikita Kuzmin, and Coronation Street star Ellie Leach alongside her pro partner Vito Coppola. Despite their success on the show and support from fans, Dianne and Bobby were pipped to the post by Ellie and Vito.

Although they didn’t get to the lift the Glitterball trophy, the pair struck up a close friendship and have remained friends since leaving the show. Dianne and Bobby also danced together again during the live Strictly tour, which ended in February, alongside their fellow Strictly 2023 finalists and a number of their series co-stars.

After finishing life on the road together, the dance couple have now reunited once again with a wholesome visit to a care home. The EastEnders actor and professional dancer visited the home to speak to residents and show off their signature dance moves.

Sharing a video of their ‘special’ time with her 1 million followers on Instagram, Dianne wrote: “Today was just pure joy to see how happy they all were to have us really was special. And I got to have another little dance with the bobsta still didn’t quite get that lift tho did we [laughing face emoji]. Thanks for having us @bobbybrazier.”

In the video, Bobby could be seen twirling a woman around whilst Dianne danced with a beaming man. The pair then showed off their moves with the care home residents clapping and cheering them along, whilst Dianne said: “Show them your hips Bobby.”

Reacting to the sweet video, one fan @keleye76 commented: “This is just wonderful to see… Humanity at its finest. P.S. I lost my Mum in October and she never got to see how far you both got in Strictly, I’m sorry she missed that. She also loved that song ‘Green Door’ by Shakin Stevens so this made me smile even more.”

Bobby’s dad Jeff Brazier wrote: “A million [heart emoji]‘s YES,” as his wife Kate Brazier added: “My heart”. @strictly_jaljaz wrote: “The smiles on their faces, I adore this,” as @eddo_official said: “This is very special to my heart. After losing my gran I could see in the last times I saw her how much song would bring her happiness and joy right until the last time. Can imagine all these guys finding so much joy and happiness seeing you two dancing to such amazing songs. How very special xxxxx.”

Sunset Boulevard has scooped seven wins at the Olivier Awards 2024.

Sunset Boulevard has scooped seven wins at the Olivier Awards 2024, with its stars Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis winning best actress and best actor in a musical for their respective performances.

The awards, presented in partnership with Mastercard, took place at the Royal Albert Hall on April 14, with Hannah Waddingham once more as master of ceremonies.

Sunset Boulevard picked up the most gongs of the evening, nabbing the prizes for categories including best director for Jamie Lloyd, best musical revival, best lighting for Jack Knowles and best sound design for Adam Fisher.

Kinky Boots returns with new production starring Johannes Radebe.

Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe is to play Lola in a new production of musical Kinky Boots.

The show, with music by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein, will open at Curve in Leicester on January 17, 2025, before touring.

It will visit venues such as the New Victoria Theatre in Woking, the Palace Theatre in Manchester and the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin. It is currently scheduled to run until July, ending at the New Theatre in Oxford.

It will be directed by Curve artistic director Nikolai Foster and will also star Dan Partridge as Charlie Price.

Cyndi Lauper said: “Kinky Boots is one of the things I’m proudest of in my career, and I’m so excited that audiences will get to see it again, in a new production. It’s like a happy pill – and we could all use some of that right now. I can’t think of a better time or place to relaunch this special show in its place of origin.”

Fierstein added: “An all new production is a thrilling event in the life of a well-loved show. And to have that rebirth occur in the place of its origin makes it all a billion times more exciting. I can’t wait to welcome Kinky Boots home.”

Curve chief executive Chris Stafford and artistic director Foster added that they were “beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to create a brand-new Kinky Boots at the Curve”, adding that it would be “returning the story to its native Midlands and manufacturing heartland of Leicester, where our theatre proudly stands today”.

“This is a story of British industrial heritage, told through Fierstein’s fiercely intelligent words, and Lauper’s explosive songs, in a truly joyful musical about overcoming adversity, celebrating individuality, the power of a good pair of heels and community spirit,” they added.

It has choreography by Leah Hill, set and costume design by Robert Jones, lighting design by Ben Cracknell, sound design by Adam Fisher and casting by Harry Blumenau.

Six the Musical extends West End run into 2025 and confirms post-show karaoke.

Award-winning musical Six has extended its current West End run into 2025 and has released details for a one-night-only post-show karaoke event.

The West End production is set to team up with its Broadway counterpart on 6 June 2024 to host a one-night-only post-show karaoke called “Six Karaoke (You Have A Voice).” The London host for the event will be cast member Hannah Lowther.

Fans will have the opportunity to perform their favourite song from the show on the Vaudeville Theatre stage (or the Lena Horne Theatre stage in New York). To enter, fans are invited to post a clip of themselves singing a number from Six to Instagram Reels/TikTok, tag the show @sixthemusical and use the hashtags #YouHaveAVoice and #SIXWestEndKaraoke.

The West End production will also hold two new sing-along performances on 12 January 2025 and 4 May 2025, in addition to the upcoming sing-alongs on 12 May 2024 and 25 August 2024.

Producer Kenny Wax commented: “We’re absolutely delighted to be extending our reign in London, providing audiences with even more opportunities to Get Down with our incredible queens and live band until May 2025. • Leeds Playhouse and Opera North have revealed the full creative team and casting for their joint production of “My Fair Lady”. It will star Katie Bird and John Hopkins and have choreography by Lucy Hind and Llandyll Gove. The show will play from the 31st of May until the 29th of June.
• The casting has been set for “Gatsby” with Isaac Powell in the leading role. The show has choreography by Sonya Tayeh and opens at the Loeb Drama Centre in Cambridge on the 5th of June.
• Casting has been announced for the Menier Chocolate Factory’s production of “Jerry’s Girls”. It will star Lyn Paul and Julie Yammanee and have choreography by Matt Cole. The show will run from the 18th of May until the 29th of June.
• Casting has been confirmed for the musical “Marie Curie”. The cast will be led by Ailsa Davidson as Marie. The production will run at the Charing Cross theatre from the 1st of June until the 28th of July. It has choreography by Joanna Goodman.
• “Heathers the Musical” will return to Soho Place from the 22nd of May until the 6th of July before embarking on a UK tour. It has choreography by Gary Lloyd.
• The Dolly Parton musical “Here You Come Again” has announced its full cast and creative team. It will be choreographed by Lizzie Gee and Teenie MacLeod and run from the 11th of May until the 8th of June in Leeds before touring.
• Lead casting has been announced for the touring version of “101 Dalmations”. It will star Kym Marsh as Cruella. The tour will open in Wimbledon on the 22nd of June. The show has choreography by Lucy Hind.
• STOP PRESS – The nominations have just been announced for the 2024 National Dance Awards. The event will take place at the Coronet theatre on the 3rd of June.

• “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” is set to embark on a world tour in 2025. The new production will launch in the UK while its West End staging will continue its run at the Piccadilly theatre.
• The current touring production of “The Wizard of Oz” will return to the West End on the 15th of August at the Gillian Lynne theatre. The cast will be led by Aston Merrygold.
• The musical “Lizzie” will return to the Hope Mill theatre in Manchester from the 17th of October until the 11th of November. It is directed and choreographed by William Whelton with associate choreography by Yandass Ndlovu.

• “Heathers” will return for a new UK tour opening in Windsor on the 24th of July. The choreographers will be Gary Lloyd and Christopher Parkinson.
• A new musical featuring the work of Steps will open at the Alexandra theatre in Birmingham from the 9th until the 24th of November. The choreography is by Matt Cole.
• A stage musical based on Prince’s film and album “Purple Rain” is in the works with producer Orin Wolf.
• “Kiss Me, Kate” will run at the Barbican theatre in London from the 4th of June until the 14th of September. It will star Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J Block and be choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.
• “The Wizard of Oz” has confirmed the full cast for its tour of the UK and Ireland. The choreography is by Shay Barclay. The show will open in Liverpool on the 13th of December 2024.
• Nick Winston and Ryan Lee Seager will be directing and choreographing the world premiere of “Burlesque The Musical” – which has Christina Aguilera as an Executive Director. The show will open at the Manchester Opera House on the 13th of June 2024.

Strictly dancer Giovanni Pernice defends himself over controversy.

 

Giovanni Pernice has vowed to stay on Strictly Come Dancing amid backlash from ex dance partners who held a ‘summit’ to discuss his behaviour. The Italian dance pro has been embroiled in crisis as a trio of celebrity women have reportedly ‘shed tears’ and discussed the possibility of ‘formally’ complaining to the BBC about his interactions with them.
However, the 33-year-old dancer has remained defiant, telling the Radio Times last week that he’s not quitting the BBC show.

When asked, alongside Strictly judge Anton Du Beke, if they would quit the ballroom series, he said: ‘Why would we do that? We love our jobs. It’s one of the best shows on television and we get to do our own shows, too.’

Pernice had been partnered with Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington, 52, last year before she sensationally quit the series five weeks later for ‘personal reasons’. She later claimed that she had been ‘suffering from PTSD’ after her time on the show and made a complaint to the BBC , which she has since withdrawn.

She recently held an ‘emotional summit’ with Pernice’s former partners Ranvir Singh and Laura Whitmore where they ‘compared notes’ about their time being paired up with him.
Abbington was also considering instructing an experienced lawyer to help her prepare a legal letter to the BBC to aid her obtaining the rehearsal footage, the paper claimed.

‘There is every possibility all three could take it further and formally complain to the BBC, but for now they’re comforting each other,’ a source told the publication.
‘Only a handful of people will understand what it’s like to be trained by Giovanni and in the industry he is regarded as a “perfectionist”.

Taylor Swift joins world’s richest on billionaire list.

Taylor Swift has joined Elon Musk as ranking among the world’s wealthiest people, according to a new rich list.
The American pop star entered the Forbes World’s Billionaires List for the first time with $1.1bn (£877m)

Singer-songwriter Swift entered the rich list after achieving megastar status. She stole the show at this year’s Grammy Awards, becoming the first performer to win the prize for album of the year four times.
Her album 1989 (Taylor’s Version) was also the best-selling vinyl LP of last year.

Swift’s success is not just confined to the world of music. Her mere presence at American football games to watch her boyfriend Travis Kelce has been credited with raising NFL viewing figures.

ITV show ‘axed’ after failing to compete with BBC Strictly Come Dancing.

ITV bosses have reportedly made the decision to axed The Masked Dancer as it failed to compete with BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and will now only continue with The Masked Singer.

After just two series, despite a “reset” the show, which inspired The Masked Singer, will no longer be aired after first launching in 2021. However, The Masked Singer, which has panelists including Davina McCaall, Mo Gilligan, Jonathan Ross and Rita Ora, will continue, as it has proved a complete success.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow extends West End run.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow at the Phoenix Theatre has extended its run through to the end of the year.

Unlike the ’80s-inspired TV series, the stage prequel is set in 1959 with characters including a young Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado, Bob Newby and Henry Creel (played respectively by Harbour, Winona Ryder, Sean Astin and Jamie Campbell Bower on screen).

Featuring an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry, Stranger Things: The First Shadow is penned by Trefry and directed by Stephen Daldry, with co-direction by Justin Martin. It has received rave reviews across the board, including from WhatsOnStage, being described as a “major visual spectacle”

The West End cast includes Shane Attwooll as Chief Hopper, Kemi Awoderu as Sue Anderson, Chase Brown as Lonnie Byers, Christopher Buckley as Bob Newby, Ammar Duffus as Charles Sinclair, Gilles Geary as Ted Wheeler, Florence Guy as Karen Childress, Max Harwood as Alan Munson, Michael Jibson as Victor Creel, Oscar Lloyd as James Hopper Jr, Louis McCartney as Henry Creel, Isabella Pappas as Joyce Maldonado, Matthew Pidgeon as Principal Newby, Calum Ross as Walter Henderson, Maisie Norma Seaton as Claudia Yount, Patrick Vaill as Dr Brenner, Ella Karuna Williams as Patty Newby and Alex Young as Virginia Creel.

McCartney was nominated for his professional debut turn as Creel at the WhatsOnStage Awards, with the production being shortlisted in a total of eight categories. It ultimately won Best New Play, while the show was recently nominated for five Olivier Awards.

SuperYou musical to play Leicester Curve.

The Curve theatre in Leicester has announced a new season of shows, including new musical SuperYou. Lourds Lane’s much talked-about show will be presented in Leicester from 22 October to 9 November 2024. The show has a book, music and lyrics by Lourds Lane.

SuperYou had been set to open off-Broadway in 2020 but Covid struck.

Instead, the show had its world premiere in Milwaukee at the Skylight Music Theatre in 2023, and a sold-out concert performance took place at the Lyric Theatre in London in November 2023, starring Lucie Jones (Wicked/Waitress/Les Miserables/X-Factor) as Katie, the show’s writer, composer Lourds Lane as Rise, Luke Brady (The Prince of Egypt) as Jay, Jenny O’Leary (Heathers) as Ima-Mazing, Sharon Ballard (Mother Goose) as Blast, Joni Ayton-Kent (Carousel) as Seven, Aaliyah Monk (School of Rock West End) as Young Katie, Jonty Peach (Romeo) as Matty, Maddy Brennan (My Fair Lady, Cabaret, Oklahoma!) as Mom, and Will Bozier (Wicked, Moulin Rouge!) as Mi-Roar.

SuperYou is about the transformative journey of a comic book artist who discovers self-love and her own voice as her superheroine creations spring to life. The musical’s score incorporates a wide range of musical styles, including rock, pop, hip hop, swing, blues, gospel, country, and soulful power ballads.

It’s unclear if the Curve is the first date of a tour for SuperYou or a stand-alone production. The show’s UK website still references a West End run in 2024.

Casting and creatives for SuperYou are yet to be announced.

Other shows announced for the Curve’s season include four Made at Curve original production: a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (13 – 15 June 2024), adapted and directed by Cara Nolan; new community production Fantastic Foxes (26 July – 3 August 2024), inspired by the story of Leicester City Football Club, written by Rob Ward; a new production of Katori Hall’s multi-award winning play The Mountaintop (21 September – 5 October 2024), directed by Nathan Powell; and Christmas show Pirates Love Underpants (2 December 2024 – 5 January 2025), a brand new musical based on Claire Freedman and Ben Cort’s picture book adapted by Brad Fitt, also directed by Cara Nolan.

Chancellor makes Theatre Tax Relief permanent in Budget.

Jeremy Hunt has announced a permanent rate for Theatre Tax Relief, after industry bosses warned a reduction to the scheme would prove a huge blow to the sector.
The chancellor has announced a rate of 45% for touring productions and 40% for non-touring shows, in what was likely the final Budget before the general election.

Hunt’s commitment does not match the exact level of what TTR had grown to – 50% for touring and 45% for non-touring productions – but will be considered a boost for the sector. The rate had been planned to taper from April 2025 (to 35% and 30% respectively) with a return to the pre-pandemic rate (25%/20%) in 2026.

Fears the rate would return to pre-pandemic levels of between 20-25% had prompted a 20% reduction in the productions planned for the next financial year, and a 17% drop in the number of playing weeks, Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre had found.

Surveyed SOLT and UK Theatre members had said the elevated rate, which was introduced in 2021 as a lockdown-era measure, had in the last financial year saved them a total value of £85,686,881 in relief claimed.

Hunt said: “In recognition of the creative and cultural sectors, Theatre Tax Relief has been made permanent. This is a wonderful lifeline for theatres, orchestras and performing arts organisations across the country.”

Producer Kenny Wax had previously warned that a “loss of the higher rate of tax would be a massive blow”.

Hunt also pledged £26 million to the National Theatre for a “major upgrade” to its stages, as he called his plans to continue higher rates for TTR “a lifeline for performing arts across the country”.

Meanwhile, Theatr Clwyd in north Wales said it was “grateful” to receive £1.6 million towards its major building redevelopment, which is currently earmarked to cost a total of more than £45 million. It vowed to put the funding to good use, by creating a “green, sustainable, world-class home for our communities, theatre-makers and future generations”.

Hunt called his plans a “Budget for long-term growth”, despite the country facing “the most challenging economic headwinds in modern history”.

In his speech, Hunt said the UK had become Europe’s largest film and TV production area, with studio space doubling in the last three years. He pledged to provide 40% relief on growth business rates to studios in the UK.

He committed £15 million to new funding for cultural projects through the West Midlands Combined Authority.

In a statement published the day prior to the budget, chief executive of advocacy group Creative UK Caroline Norbury said that in 2022 the gross value added of the creative industries had grown by more than 15% to £125 billion. “The Chancellor himself calls us a growth engine. Despite all this, we are undercapitalised. And that needs to change,” she added.

But lobbying conducted by the sector has been successful, with SOLT and UK Theatre saying they were “delighted with the chancellor’s announcement of a new permanent rate of Theatre Tax Relief. This is fantastic news for the theatre sector”.

Other changes announced in the Budget included a predicted 2p cut to National Insurance – a standout move estimated to cost approximately £10 billion – and yet another extended freeze on fuel duty.

However, despite campaigning backed by arts figures like Andrew Lloyd Webber and venues such as Shakespeare’s Globe, the chancellor did not reinstate tax-free shopping for tourists – something he had suggested he may “look again” at in his Autumn Statement.
The decision to leave tourist tax unchanged leaves Britain the only country in Europe to tax tourists for shopping; a situation which some argue lessens tourist spending in other areas, such as hospitality, transport, live entertainment, and the arts.

• The musical “Lizzie” will return to the Hope Mill theatre in Manchester from the 17th of October until the 11th of November. It is directed and choreographed by William Whelton with associate choreography by Yandass Ndlovu.
• “Mary Poppins” announced a new UK tour. It will star Stefanie Jones and Jack Chambers and have choreography by Sir Matt Bourne and Stephen Mear. The show will open on the 4th of November at the Bristol Hippodrome.
• “Magic at the Musicals” will return to the Royal Albert Hall on the 22nd of September. Participating in the event so far are: “Hadestown”, “Mamma Mia”, “Six” & “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical”.
• “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” is set to return for a new tour starring Donny Osmond. It will open at the Edinburgh Playhouse on the 3rd of December. The choreography is by JoAnn M Hunter.
• “Heathers” will return for a new UK tour opening in Windsor on the 24th of July. The choreographers will be Gary Lloyd and Christopher Parkinson.
• A new musical featuring the work of Steps will open at the Alexandra theatre in Birmingham from the 9th until the 24th of November. The choreography is by Matt Cole.
• A stage musical based on Prince’s film and album “Purple Rain” is in the works with producer Orin Wolf.
• “Kiss Me, Kate” will run at the Barbican theatre in London from the 4th of June until the 14th of September. It will star Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J Block and be choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.
• Luba and Vito from Strictly headline a Charity Dance Show at Dudley Town Hall on the 9th of April at 7.30 pm. You can get tickets at: mpvtickets.com
• The European premiere of “Your Lie in April” will take place at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on the 8th & 9th of April 2024. It will be directed and choreographed by Nick Winston. The casting director is Harry Blumenau.
• “The Wizard of Oz” has confirmed the full cast for its tour of the UK and Ireland. The choreography is by Shay Barclay. The show will open in Liverpool on the 13th of December 2024.
• Nick Winston and Ryan Lee Seager will be directing and choreographing the world premiere of “Burlesque The Musical” – which has Christina Aguilera as an Executive Director. The show will open at the Manchester Opera House on the 13th of June 2024.
• “Mean Girls” is coming to the Savoy Theatre in June 2024.
• A touring musical version of “101 Dalmations” will open in Wimbledon on the 22nd of June 2024.
• “& Juliet” will embark on a UK tour from the 8th of July 2024. The choreographer is Jennifer Weber.
• “The Devil Wears Prada” has confirmed its West End run and UK premiere. It will be directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell and be cast by Jill Green. The show will open in Plymouth on the 9th of July 2024.
• “Starlight Express” is to return to London in the Summer of 2024. It will be choreographed by Ashley Nottingham.
• “Some Like It Hot” is coming to the West End in 2025. It will be directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw.
• Full casting has been revealed for the first UK and Ireland tour of “Aladdin”. Gavin Adams will star with Desmonda Cathabel as Jasmine. Sarah Benbelaid is the Assistant Dance Captain. The show will open in Edinburgh in October.
• The 2024 Mighty Hoopla Big Weekender has announced its line up led by: Natalie Imbruglia, Cascada and Gabrielle.
• “Shucked” will open in the West End in 2024. The choreographer is Sarah O’Gleby.
• The lead cast has been unveiled for “We Will Rock You” opening in the West End. It will star Lee Mead and Brenda Edwards.
• “Jesus Christ Superstar” will tour the UK in 2023/4 opening in Manchester this September. The choreography is by Drew McOnie.
