Our Pro Dancer News reflects on the major dance events of the last few weeks.

Sadler’s Wells announces a new annual Youth Festival showcasing the best dance being created with young people.

In July 2025, Sadler’s Wells will present the first edition YFX Youth Festival, a new annual festival which celebrates and showcases the exceptional range of youth work across the United Kingdom.

For its inaugural edition, Sadler’s Wells is partnering to present work from the National Youth Dance Companies of England, Scotland and Wales, new choreographic creations from young people and showcases featuring youth groups from around the country. In addition, the Festival will host a series of workshops for young dancers, as well as talks and symposiums all centred on dance for children and young people.

The Festival takes place across Sadler’s Wells Theatre and the Lilian Baylis Studio in Angel and at Sadler’s Wells East, the brand-new state-of-the-art theatre that opens in Stratford next year.

Sheridan Smith, Samantha Barks and more to perform giant musical concert in Manchester.

    

A giant musical celebration is heading to Manchester next month.

Taking place at the Co-op Arena on 20 December, the event will blend the worlds of musicals and festive celebration.

Set to appear will be multi-award-winner Sheridan Smith performing songs from The Greatest Showman, Cilla and more, as well as Samantha Barks, along with a lineup of surprise guests. All will be accompanied by Manchester Camerata – a Manchester-based chamber orchestra.

Casting has been announced for the Schmigadoon! stage musical.

Schmigadoon!, a new stage musical inspired by the Apple TV+ series, will have its world premiere next January in Washington – and casting has now been revealed.

The show will play from 31 January to 9 February at the Kennedy Center.

Presented as part of the Broadway Center Stage series, Schmigadoon! will have a book and score by Cinco Paul, co-creator of the much-loved series, and direction and choreography by Christopher Gattelli.

Songs will include hits from the television show, including the Emmy-winning “Corn Puddin’,” as well as new material.

Inspired by Paul’s AppleTV+ series, Schmigadoon! will star Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice) and Sara Chase (The Great Gatsby) as Josh and Melissa, a couple who get trapped in a magical town that’s a Golden Age Broadway musical come to life.

They’re joined by Kevin Del Aguila as Reverend Layton, Ann Harada reprising her role from the series as Florence Menlove, McKenzie Kurtz as Betsy, Isabelle McCalla as Emma, Javier Muńoz as Doc Lopez, Brad Oscar as Mayor Menlove, Emily Skinner as Mildred, and Ryan Vasquez as Danny.

The series, with a star-studded cast led by Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong, as well as Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Dove Cameron, Aaron Tveit, and many others, ran for two seasons.

• The average top-price ticket in theatres across the UK has risen by 15% compared with 2023, The Stage’s UK ticketing survey has revealed.
• Pete and Jowita were eliminated in the Strictly Semi-Final. Tasha and Alijaz and JB and Lauren received perfect scores for one of their two dances.
• “Wicked” opened in cinemas worldwide and became the biggest box office opening of a musical adaptation. “Wicked: Part 2” will come to cinemas on the 21st of November 2025 – exactly a year after the first movie.
• Jennifer White and Lisa Welham have been nominated for a World Choreography Award for their work on “Barbie”.
• Dane Hurst has been appointed as interim Artistic Director of the Joburg Ballet for the first 6 months of 2025.
• Caroline Miller is to step down as CEO of Birmingham Royal Ballet next April due to ill health.
• “Scissorhandz: A Musical Reinvented” has announced that Jordan Kai Burnett will star as Scissorhandz. The show has choreography by Alexzandra Sarmiento and will open on the 23rd of January 2025 at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant in London.
• “& Juliet” announced that Jay McGuinness will be joining the tour to play Shakespeare.
• Vladimir Shklyarov, the star Principle dancer of the Mariinsky Theatre, has died aged 39.

Future Dance Events News

• The world premiere of new musical “Midnight Cowboy” will open at the Southwark Playhouse in London on the 4th of April 2025. It is directed and choreographed by Nick Winston.
• “Scissorhandz: A Musical Reinvented” will have its European premiere at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant on the 23rd of January 2025. The choreography is by Alexzandra Sarmiento.
• “Hercules” will open at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on the 6th of June 2025. It will star Luke Brady and have choreography by Casey Nicholaw and Tanisha Scott.
• “The Great Gatsby” will open in the West End at the London Coliseum on the 11th of April 2025. It has choreography by Dominique Kelley.
• “Titanique” has announced the complete cast for its West End run. It will star Darren Bennett and Lauren Drew and have choreography by Ellenore Scott. The show opens at the Criterion theatre in London on the 9th of December.
• Lead casting has been announced for the UK premiere of “Muriel’s Wedding The Musical”. It will star Megan Ellis and Annabel Marlow. The choreography is by Andrew Hallsworth. The show will run from the 10th of April until the 10th of May 2025 at the Curve theatre in Leicester.
• The full cast has been announced for Sondheim’s final musical “Here We are”. It will star Tracie Bennett and Denis O’ Hare and have choreography by Sam Pinkleton. The show will run at the National Theatre in April 2025.
• “Clueless” is coming to the West End. The show will have choreography by Kelly Devine and will open at the Trafalgar theatre on the 15th of February 2025.
• The world premiere of the new musical “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” will be staged in Bath in the Spring of 2025.
• “Bat Out of Hell” has revealed tour dates and venues for its 2025 tour. The show will star Glenn Adamson and Katie Tonkinson and has choreography by Xenia Gusthart. The show will open in Edinburgh on the 6th of January 2025.
• Disney’s animated classic “Hercules” is headed for the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the Summer of 2025. It will have choreography by Casey Nicholaw and Tanisha Scott.
• The world premiere of “Wild Rose” will run from the 6th of March until the 5th of April 2025 at the Lyceum theatre in Scotland. It has choreography by Steven Hoggett.
• “Calamity Jane” will tour the UK and Ireland before a West End run in 2025. It has choreography by Nick Winston.
• The Leeds Playhouse will host the world premiere of “Coraline – A Musical” from the 11th of April to the 11th of May 2025 before the show embarks on a UK tour. The choreography is by EJ Boyle.
• “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” is set to embark on a world tour in 2025. The new production will launch in the UK while its West End staging will continue its run at the Piccadilly theatre.
• A stage musical based on Prince’s film and album “Purple Rain” is in the works with producer Orin Wolf.
• “The Wizard of Oz” has confirmed the full cast for its tour of the UK and Ireland. The choreography is by Shay Barclay. The show will open in Liverpool on the 13th of December 2024.
• “Some Like It Hot” is coming to the West End in 2025. It will be directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw.

• We spotted the following dancers in the new film “Wicked”: Abbie Brown, Chanelle Anthony, Emily Haygarth, Emily Kenwright, Lukas McFarlane, Michael Naylor, Olivia Beckford, Petra Hadjuk, Faye Stoeser, Sasha Woodward, Will West and Collette Guitart.
• We spotted Hannah Veerapen, Alexia Collard, Kat Collings, Kate Playdon, Preeti Sian and Naomi Weijand performing as dancing nuns in the new “Paddington” movie. The choreography was by Lisa Welham and Jennifer White.
• We spotted Oluwatosin as one of the British Embassy dancers on “Paris Has Fallen”. The choreography was by Kloe Dean.
• We spotted Hannah Swift in a Christmas shoot for Shein.
